The Custom Tone Ethos Overdrive is an analog overdrive preamp pedal designed by Vermont-based builder Custom Tone1. It belongs to the family of D-style pedals, circuits built to capture the tone of the boutique Dumble amplifiers, and Delicious Audio calls it the original, "deluxe-expensive" version of what became, after its release, a family of increasingly streamlined pedals1.

Where a typical overdrive pedal shapes an already-amplified guitar signal, the Ethos works as a preamp: two separate channels, each with its own 3-band plus Presence EQ section, each settable as Clean or Overdrive via a toggle switch, and each brought in by its own footswitch1. A separate Boost footswitch controls a boost circuit built into the pedal1. There is also a cab sim out, so the pedal can feed a mixing desk or interface directly1.

A Dumble-style overdrive preamp

The Ethos takes its cue from the Dumble amplifiers that a whole category of pedals imitates. Premier Guitar, reviewing the related Ethos Clean-Fusion Preamp, noted "an extra overdrive channel for Dumble-like tones with molasses-thick saturation"2. Delicious Audio describes the Ethos family as pedals "inspired by the tone of the uber-boutique Dumble amplifiers," with the original Ethos Overdrive as the deluxe, expensive starting point of that line1.

Delicious Audio's overall verdict on the Ethos was positive on both counts that matter here, the resemblance and the range1:

"The control scheme may be slightly daunting, but you can get an incredible variety of tones out of it, and the Dumble resemblance is as good as it gets."1

Two channels, EQ and footswitches

The Ethos is laid out like a two-channel amp in a box. Each channel has its own gain structure and its own 3-band plus Presence EQ, and a toggle on each channel decides whether it runs Clean or Overdrive1. Gearnews describes it the same way: "This dual-channel pedal has independent EQ and GAIN controls for each channel"3. Three footswitches sit on the pedal: one to bring in each channel, and a third for the Boost1.

For a player, this means the Ethos can hold two complete, footswitchable voices, for example a clean platform on one channel and a driven D-style voice on the other, with a boost on top of either. The trade-off, as Delicious Audio notes, is that the control scheme is slightly daunting at first glance1.

Mods and the Ethos family

Custom Tone offers custom mods to the original design1:

  • TLE (Tighter Low End): a mod whose name says its aim, a firmer low end1
  • HRM: adds a finely tuned 3-band post-EQ inspired by the later models of the Dumble amps1
  • FX Loop mod: places an effects loop between the two channels and the cab sim outputs1

The family has also shrunk over time. The Ethos TWE-1 Overdrive is a compact version of the preamps Custom Tone built, which got progressively smaller4. The TWE-1 carries its own voice-shaping options: a Hi/Lo Presence switch, a Modern/Traditional Voice switch, and a 3-way Brite high-frequency boost5, plus a 3-position Cab switch (4x12, 2x12, off) whose 4x12 position "beefs up the low-end significantly," in the words of the Guitar FX Layouts analysis6. A later Delicious Audio buying guide also lists an Ethos Clean Fusion II, with Clean and Overdrive channels that have dedicated Gain and Volume knobs but a shared EQ section, a simplification compared with the original's per-channel EQ7.

The Ethos name has since spread beyond overdrive. Custom Tones' Ethos 60's Harmonic Bias Trem is a tremolo with Tone, Volume Trim, Slow Speed, Fast Speed and Intensity controls, an Amplitude/Harmonic mode switch, and a three-footswitch format with a Speed footswitch toggling Slow/Fast plus Bypass8.

Questions

Is the Custom Tone Ethos Overdrive analog?

Yes. Delicious Audio describes it as an extremely versatile and tweakable analog device. It is built as a preamp rather than a simple overdrive, with two channels, per-channel EQ, a Boost stage, and a cab sim output, all in an analog circuit designed by Vermont-based builder Custom Tone.

What is the TLE mod on the Ethos?

TLE stands for Tighter Low End. It is one of the custom mods Custom Tone offers on the original Ethos design, alongside the HRM mod and an FX Loop mod. As its name says, it is aimed at firming up the low end of the pedal's overdrive voicing.

What does the HRM mod do?

The HRM mod adds a finely tuned 3-band post-EQ inspired by the later models of Dumble amplifiers. It sits after the Ethos's normal tone controls, giving a second layer of tone shaping in the style of the later Dumble circuits the pedal takes its inspiration from.

Does the Ethos have a cab sim output?

Yes. The Custom Tone Ethos Overdrive has a cab sim out, so it can feed a mixer, interface, or power amp directly. An FX Loop mod is also available that places an effects loop between the two channels and the cab sim outputs.

How many footswitches does the Ethos have?

Three. There are separate footswitches for the two channels, so you can switch between them like an amp's channel selector, plus a third Boost footswitch for the built-in boost circuit. Each channel can be set to Clean or Overdrive by toggle.
