The DigiTech Bass Synth Wah is a bass effects pedal that combines seven different synth and wah effects in one unit, including envelope filter, synth tones, filter generators and octave shift1. It sits in the same family as DigiTech's guitar-oriented Synth Wah, an X-Series envelope filter pedal that also offers seven synth effects, from envelope filters and synth tones to filter sweeps2. For a bass player after synth-style textures without a full multi-effects unit, it covers a lot of that ground in a single pedal. It belongs to the wider family of filter pedals and synth pedals.
What it does
The pedal's seven effect types cover the main synth-bass tricks: envelope filter for auto-wah movement, synth tones, filter generators and octave shifting1. One feature DigiTech highlights is flexibility in how it sits in a signal chain: the Bass Synth Wah can be run inline with your current pedals, or parallel with your bass tone, to create combinations of the clean bass sound and the synth effect1. Running it in parallel means the dry bass note can stay underneath while the synth voices sit on top, rather than replacing the original tone.
The pedal draws 299 mA at 9V DC1, which is well beyond what most pedalboard power supplies deliver per output on a daisy chain. Plan a dedicated high-current output for it.
Who has used it
Bassist Charlie Jones, known for his work with The Cult and Siouxsie, used the Bass Synth Wah on the "They Follow You" bass solo. He described the chain like this3:
"I used that and the DigiTech Bass Synth Wah, going into a distortion pedal with a delay at the end of the chain."
That setup puts the Bass Synth Wah early in the chain, with distortion and delay after it shaping the synth tones further3.
