The DigiTech PDS 8000 is a looper pedal, a pedal that records what you play and plays it back so you can layer parts over it. DigiTech describes it as an early design from the company's history: "When we developed the PDS 8000 looper pedal over twenty years ago, it looped eight seconds of audio."1
What it does
The PDS 8000 records a passage of playing and repeats it, giving the player eight seconds of recorded audio to jam over. DigiTech also describes it as offering "eight seconds of delay or looped audio," meaning the same recording capacity could serve as a long delay, repeating a phrase once rather than looping it continuously.3
Eight seconds is a modest amount of looping by later standards, but at the time it let a single player hold down a rhythm part and solo over it, or set a short phrase repeating as a backdrop. For a player looking at DigiTech's later looping pedals, such as the Digitech Jam Man, the PDS 8000 is the early ancestor of that line: DigiTech itself cites it when describing how its JamMan loopers grew out of this design.1
