Key facts
TypePreamp adapted as a stompbox1
Active componentTL081 single op-amp (TL071 works as a substitute; NE5534 does not)1
ControlsVolume (100K, standard output level control) and tone1
Original outputPseudo-balanced XLR1

The DOD Studio Bifet Preamp / 410 is a preamp design from DOD, built around a single TL081 op-amp with volume and tone controls. The original unit included a pseudo-balanced XLR output, and a DIY vero layout published on Tagboardeffects in October 2013 adapts the circuit for stompbox use without that output1.

The original's pseudo-balanced XLR output

The original 410's XLR output is not truly balanced. As the Tagboardeffects author describes it, "it looks like they have wired XLR pins 3 (cold) and 1 (ground) both to ground and pin 2 (hot) becomes your output"1. In other words, there is no cold signal on the connector: pin 2 simply carries an unbalanced output on an XLR plug. The DIY layout omits this output stage altogether, adapting the circuit "without the pseudo-balanced output and adapted to work as a stompbox"1.

The DIY vero layout

Tagboardeffects published the layout on 10 October 2013. The author describes it as a "simple design with low parts count, so it might be nice thing to experiment on"1. A builder completed the circuit with a ua741, and the author marked the layout as verified: "I'm tagging this as verified. Thanks multipraktik." He added, "Working with ua741, sound is great"1.

One build detail matters: a cut under the 3.9M resistor must be made on the vero board. Omitting it makes the tone stack misbehave1.

The cut under the 3.9M resistor is required. Without it, the tone stack does not behave as it should1.

Controls and level

The layout uses two pots:

ControlDetail
Volume100K, wired as a standard output level control1
ToneWorks as intended; probing at pin 6 of the chip and adjusting the tone gives a volume change1

The pot tapers are not mentioned on the schematic the author found, but he suspects that linear taper should work well enough for both pots1.

On level, the author's own caution is worth quoting: "Not really sure if this is worth a build as it is supposed to be not that loud"1. The verified builder's report that the sound is great suggests the design still has something to offer despite the modest output1.

Questions

Which op-amp does the DOD Studio Bifet Preamp 410 use?

The circuit uses a TL081 single op-amp. According to the Tagboardeffects layout author, a TL071 works as a substitute, but an NE5534 does not: as he put it, "Ne5534 is not a replacement for tl081, tl071 is ok." A builder also reported the circuit working with a ua741, describing the sound as great.

Can an NE5534 be used in the DOD Studio Bifet Preamp 410 layout?

No. The layout author states that the NE5534 is not a replacement for the TL081 in this circuit, and that the TL071 is the suitable substitute. Builders who want to experiment have the option of a ua741, which one builder used in a verified working build.

What pot values and tapers does the layout call for?

The layout calls for a 100K volume pot wired as a standard output level control, plus a tone pot. The pot tapers are not mentioned on the schematic the layout author found, but he suspects that linear taper should work well enough for both pots.

Is the original 410 output truly balanced?

No. On the original unit, XLR pin 3 (cold) and pin 1 (ground) are both wired to ground, and pin 2 (hot) carries the output. That makes it a pseudo-balanced output rather than a truly balanced one, and the DIY layout omits it entirely.

How loud is the DOD Studio Bifet Preamp 410?

The layout author on Tagboardeffects noted that the circuit is supposed to be not that loud, and raised the question of whether it is worth building for that reason. A builder who completed the layout with a ua741 nonetheless reported that the sound is great.
