Dunlop JH1D Jimi Hendrix

The Dunlop JH1D Jimi Hendrix Cry Baby Wah is a wah pedal from Dunlop, part of the company's long-running Cry Baby line. It is a signature model built around the wah sound associated with Jimi Hendrix, and it carries a list price of $179.99¹.

Dunlop describes the pedal's voicing as delivering "the dark, thick, and focused sound Jimi Hendrix made famous"². In practical terms, that means the wah sweep is tuned toward a heavier, more concentrated low-mid character rather than a bright, open sweep, the kind of wah voice heard throughout Hendrix's recorded work.

What it does

Like any Cry Baby wah, the JH1D is a foot-treadle filter: rocking the pedal back and forth sweeps a resonant peak across the frequency spectrum, so the guitar's tone moves from dark to bright and back in a vocal-like sweep. What separates one Cry Baby from another is largely the voicing of that sweep, and the JH1D's is set up to reproduce the Hendrix character, dark, thick, and focused in Dunlop's own words².

The lightweight aluminum housing is the other distinguishing feature Dunlop calls out for this model². Aluminum construction makes the pedal easier to carry on a pedalboard than a heavier steel enclosure, which matters to players who move their rig often.

The JH1D is one of several Hendrix-related wahs in the Dunlop catalog, alongside the Dunlop JH-1 Hendrix Wah and the Dunlop JH-1B Jimi Hendrix. It also sits within the wider Cry Baby family, which runs from the Dunlop GCB95 Original Cry Baby to numerous artist signature models such as the Dunlop Kirk Hammett Cry Baby and the Dunlop Joe Bonamassa Cry Baby.
