The Dunlop XP Series Expression Pedal for Neural DSP Quad Cortex is an expression pedal made by Dunlop, designed to sit alongside the Quad Cortex and put modeler parameters under your foot: volume, wah, and whatever else the unit lets you assign to an expression input. Dunlop lists it at $189.99.1
What an expression pedal does here
An expression pedal does not pass your guitar signal. It sends control data to the modeler, so rocking the pedal changes a parameter in real time: sweep a filter, fade a volume, open a wah. On the Quad Cortex, that means the pedal becomes a performance control for the sounds the unit generates, rather than a pedal in the chain itself.
The XP Series family
Dunlop builds the XP Series as a set of pedals, each matched to a specific modeler's expression input. The Quad Cortex version follows the same idea as its siblings, and the family pages show what Dunlop emphasizes across the line241:
| Pedal | Matched to | What Dunlop says it does |
|---|---|---|
| XP for Line 6 Helix | Helix modelers supporting expression and toe switch | Designed to the exact specifications of those modelers2 |
| XP for Line 6 | All Line 6 products with an expression input | Smooth, accurate heel-to-toe tracking, calibrated to match every Line 6 expression input4 |
| XP for Kemper | Kemper Profiler | Smooth sweep with accurate tracking from heel to toe; the toe switch engages and disengages effects with on/off modes1 |
| XP for TMP | That unit's expression input | Controls parameters such as volume and the wah effect; the sweep is smooth and even3 |
The common thread is calibration: Dunlop's claim for the family is that each version is matched to the response of the device it is made for, so the heel-to-toe sweep tracks evenly across its travel instead of bunching up at one end. On the Kemper and Helix versions, a toe switch adds a second function, letting you turn an effect on and off with a push of the toe, the way a built-in wah pedal works.124
Hooking it up
The XP for TMP page gives the clearest picture of the wiring the family expects: it requires one TRS cable and one standard instrument cable.3 A TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) cable carries the expression control signal to the modeler's expression input, so it is worth having one on hand; a ordinary guitar cable will not do that job.
The XP Series is sold in device-specific versions. Each is calibrated for a particular maker's expression input, so the version you pair with a unit matters for how the sweep responds.
