The Electric Love FX Norrsken is a fuzz pedal designed by the New York brand Electric Love FX in collaboration with EarthQuaker Devices. It is a modern interpretation of a rare and rather unique Swedish fuzz pedal from the 1970s, the Carlin Compressor, and it offers what Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio described as "an array of squishy fuzz tones and an active 3-band EQ to expand its sonic range."12
Where it came from
The pedal's roots are the Carlin Compressor Fuzz, a 9-transistor circuit built in Sweden in 1970. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson described the Norrsken as Electric Love and EarthQuaker Devices' take that "evolves the 1970 Swedish Carlin Compressor Fuzz," an adapted version of the original design with an additional 3-band active EQ, developed by Ben Carlin with Jamie Stillman of EarthQuaker Devices.23
The Norrsken was announced on 24 and 25 October 2024 as a collaboration between the two brands.12
What it does
The Norrsken combines two circuits, a compressor and a fuzz, in one enclosure. Pedal of the Day noted that you can run the Compressor and the Fuzz circuits separately by turning the respective Fuzz and Comp/Sus knobs to minimum, so the pedal can serve as a compressor alone, a fuzz alone, or both together.4
The active 3-band EQ sets it apart from most fuzz pedals, letting a player shape bass, mid and treble after the fuzz stage rather than living with a fixed voicing.1
The Norrsken was a charity pedal: Electric Love donated 100% of the profits of its sales to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.4
