The Emma Electronic ON-1 Okto-Nøjs is a guitar and bass effect pedal that combines a fast-tracking octave down, called Okto, with a synth-like octave fuzz, called Nøjs. Both sections are all-analog, and each is blendable, so the two voices can be used together or set against each other. It was announced in November 2016 as the first new Emma Electronic pedal in nearly 10 years, and was available from 15 December 2016 at $2491.

What it does

The pedal puts two related but distinct effects in one box:

  • Okto: an octave-down section that produces a note one octave below what you play, built on tracking circuitry designed to lock in fast and stay stable2
  • Nøjs: a synth-like octave fuzz voice, blended in with its own control and shaped by the Color knob2
  • Blending: each section is blendable, so the sub-octave and the fuzz can be mixed together or used separately1

Fast, stable tracking matters for an octave-down effect because a circuit that loses the note produces glitches and sputter instead of a clean sub-octave. Guitar Interactive Magazine described the Okto as using "proprietary tracking circuitry to create a sub-octave that locks in fast and remains stable"2.

The Nøjs section is the fuzz voice. Per Guitar Interactive Magazine, the "Nøjs control blends in a square wave sub-harmonic that can be thick & meaty or edgy & aggressive depending on the setting of the Color control"2. In practice that means the same control moves the fuzz between a deep, rounded character and a harder-edged one.

Controls

Each section of the pedal is blendable, and both can be adjusted via tone, gain and color controls1. That gives each voice its own set of three knobs rather than a shared EQ, so the octave-down side and the fuzz side can be shaped independently before being mixed together.

Bass players and low tunings

MusicRadar reported that the Okto side can track right down to a low open E on a bass, meaning it is suitable for mid- and low-range players1. That is a practical point for bassists and for guitarists in dropped tunings, where octave-down circuits often struggle to hold the fundamental.

Release and availability

Emma Electronic announced the ON-1 Okto-Nøjs in November 2016 as its first new pedal in nearly 10 years1. MusicRadar gave an availability date of 15 December 2016 at $2491.

The ON-1 Okto-Nøjs was Emma Electronic's first new pedal in nearly 10 years when it was announced in November 20161. Guitar Interactive Magazine's report on the pedal appeared under Godlyke, the company named as releasing it2.

A related listing for the pedal also appears on the site's fuzz pedal pages.
