The Flower Pedals Dandelion Tremolo V2 is a compact tremolo pedal released in May 2019 as an update to the company's Dandelion Tremolo1. It is a hybrid design: an analog optical tremolo circuit, the same approach as the tremolos built into classic amps, with digital controls2. Flower Pedals kept the original's analog circuitry and core controls while adding more features, including tap tempo, expression control and a dual mode13.

The pedal offers three tremolo types. Standard tremolo varies the volume up and down, which is what most guitarists picture when they think of tremolo. Harmonic tremolo, which stems from classic amps of the past, has a warbly, almost vibrato-like feel, and the Dandelion gives it three voicings. Dual mode, previously known as double, bounces the tremolo effect between two speed settings23.

What the Dandelion Tremolo V2 does

Tremolo, at its simplest, is a repeated rise and fall in volume. The Dandelion V2 covers that ground with its standard mode, but its harmonic mode is where it reaches further back. Flower Pedals describes the difference in its own words:

"Harmonic tremolo stems from classic amps of the past with a warbly, almost vibrato like feel. Standard tremolo is what most guitarists think of when they think of tremolo: varying the volume up and down."2

The harmonic mode comes with three voicings, selectable on the pedal's Voicing control2. Dual mode rounds out the set: instead of holding one speed, it bounces the effect between two speed settings, previously called double mode, which produces a more complex, shifting pulse than a single-rate tremolo3.

Controls, switching and power

The V2 keeps the original Dandelion's core controls, comprising boost, depth, speed and shape, and adds type and voicing controls53. The Shape control cycles through four waveforms: ramp, triangle, sine and square3. Each waveform changes the character of the volume sweep, from the smooth rise and fall of a sine to the hard on-off chop of a square.

ControlWhat it does
BoostSets the output level53
DepthSets how deep the volume swing goes53
SpeedSets the tremolo rate53
ShapeCycles through four waveforms: ramp, triangle, sine and square53
TypeSelects the tremolo type5
VoicingSelects between the 3 voicings for the harmonic tremolo25

Switching is handled by silent relay switching, with soft relay switching that can be set to default on or default off54. Tap tempo and hold are accessed via a footswitch, so the speed can be set in time with the music rather than by ear on the Speed knob5. The tremolo can also be controlled with an expression pedal, and the V2 carries an exp/tap jack for this purpose53.

Power comes from a 9V DC center-negative supply drawing 100mA2.

At 100mA, the Dandelion V2 draws more current than a simple analog tremolo, so plan for it on a powered pedalboard rather than a small daisy chain.

Where it came from and what it costs

"I think this is a good-sounding boutique tremolo. It's the sort of pedal that could boot my old T-Rex Tremster off my board."5

Questions

Does the Flower Pedals Dandelion Tremolo V2 have tap tempo?

Yes. Tap tempo is accessed via a footswitch, so you can set the tremolo speed in time with the music by tapping rather than dialing in the Speed knob. The pedal also has a hold function on the same footswitch.

Can you use an expression pedal with the Dandelion Tremolo V2?

Yes. The tremolo can be controlled with an expression pedal, which lets you sweep parameters such as speed with your foot while playing. The V2 also carries an exp/tap jack for this purpose.

Is the Dandelion Tremolo V2 analog or digital?

It is a hybrid. The audio path is an analog optical tremolo, the same approach used in classic amp tremolos, while the controls are digital. Flower Pedals kept the same analog circuitry when it updated the original Dandelion to the V2.

How much does the Flower Pedals Dandelion Tremolo V2 cost?

At launch in 2019 it sold for $249 USD, available on the Flower Pedals website and Reverb.com with free shipping in the U.S.

What is the difference between the Dandelion Tremolo and the V2?

The V2 keeps the same analog circuitry, voicings and core controls but adds four tap divisions, a ramp function, an exp/tap jack, and a dual mode, previously known as double, that bounces the tremolo between two speed settings.
