The Fractal Audio VP4 is a compact multi-effects pedal that Fractal calls a "virtual pedalboard" processor: it runs four effects at the same time, with an interface designed to feel like four traditional pedals on one board1. Its effects are based on the award-winning Axe-Fx III, Fractal's flagship rack modeler, and press coverage counts the library at over 400 effect emulations12. It was announced in October 2024 as a way to add Fractal Audio effects to any amp or modeler3.

The key point for a player comparing units: the VP4 has no amp models. MusicRadar's Jonathan Horsley put it plainly when the unit launched456:

"The effects are based on the award-winning Axe-Fx III"1

That makes it a different animal from Fractal's own FM9 or the AM4 amp modeler pedal: it is an effects unit, in the same territory as a multi-effects pedal like the Line 6 Helix HX Effects or Eventide H90, which Guitar Pedal X named as its direct competitors at launch7.

What the VP4 does: four effects as a virtual pedalboard

The VP4 provides four simultaneous effects with a user-friendly experience inspired by traditional guitar pedals1. Four footswitches use classic ON/OFF switching, so you can turn each of the four effects on and off the way you would stomp four separate pedals1. The unit holds 104 presets, and each preset is like a complete pedalboard with your choice of four effects1.

The factory default "Gig Mode" switching system places Presets, Scenes, Effects, Channels, Tuner and Tap Tempo right at your feet1. Controls on the unit are soft knobs (A, B, C, D), six buttons and the four footswitches8.

The effect library is where the value sits. Guitar World's 2026 multi-effects buying guide counts 300 effects, describing the unit as "packed with a whopping 300 drives, reverbs, delays, and modulation effects, making it a great Swiss-army knife" for a pedalboard9. Gearnews counted over 400 effect emulations at launch2. The effects are based on the Axe-Fx III, and Gearnews' Julian Schmauch noted that "With the quality of the effects, as we know them from AXE FXIII, there should be perfect combinations for almost every" player2.

The limit is four effects at once, which MusicRadar's beginner-focused guide lists as the unit's main constraint6. MusicRadar's main 2026 guide also sees the range as a creative tool, not just a substitute for missing pedals:

"The range of high-quality effects crammed into the VP-4 means that it can be used to experiment, as well as cover specific pedals missing on a board"5

Power and connections

The VP4 runs on a supplied 9V DC adapter drawing 1300 mA8. That current draw is high for a compact pedal, well beyond what a typical daisy chain supplies, so plan on a dedicated output or the included power supply.

At 1300 mA, the VP4 needs a power supply that can deliver its full current on a single 9V output. The included adapter handles this; a shared daisy chain will not.

Connections on the rear panel5:

ConnectionDetail
Analog I/OL/Mono and R inputs, L/Mono and R outputs, mono or stereo operation87
Digital I/OSPDIF in and out17
MIDIMIDI in and out1
USBUSB-C, audio and MIDI17
ExpressionTwo pedal jacks for expression pedals or extra foot switches18

The analog I/O runs at unity gain with what Fractal describes as an ultra-low noise floor1. Up to two expression pedals or switches can be connected for real-time control of effect settings1. Firmware 3 added an IR Player, allowing the VP4 to perform speaker cab simulation and more1, so the unit can now load impulse responses for cab simulation, useful if you run it into a power amp or flat system.

The bypass is buffered analog, not true bypass18. The unit measures 252 mm wide by 162 mm deep by 62 mm high8.

What reviewers said

Guitar World's Trevor Curwen reviewed the VP4 and concluded that the price is worth it8:

"The asking price represents a sizable outlay, but we think it's justified, considering the sheer range of quality"8

His review lists the range of quality effects, practical usage options and bulletproof build as the overall verdict, and gives the unit's origin as USA8. Guitar Player's Dave Hunter called it a clever design, highly functional, great sounding and reasonably priced, listing those as his reasons to buy10. His review describes the build as China and USA, so the two reviews disagree on where the unit is assembled10.

Not every take was glowing. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson found the look dated7:

"As a device the VP4 looks to have bene beamed from about 10 years ago!"7

His review also called the big blocky interface a little nonsensical, while still covering the unit's specs in detail against the Line 6 Helix HX Effects and Eventide H907.

In MusicRadar's October 2026 update of its best multi-effects pedals guide, the VP4 was named best compact multi-effects pedal5.

Questions

Does the Fractal VP4 have amp models?

No. The VP4 is designed to be used with your guitar amp or modeler, not to replace it. There are no amp models in the unit. It is Fractal Audio's first non-modeling device, focused entirely on effects: drives, delays, reverbs and modulation.

Can the VP4 load IRs?

Yes. Firmware 3 added an IR Player, allowing the VP4 to perform speaker cab simulation and more. So while the unit ships as an effects processor, a firmware update gives it impulse-response support for cab simulation.

Is the Fractal VP4 true bypass?

No. The VP4 uses buffered analog bypass. When an effect is switched off, the signal still passes through the unit's buffer rather than a true bypass path.

How many expression pedals does the VP4 support?

Up to two. The rear panel has two expression pedal ports, and you can connect expression pedals or extra foot switches for real-time control of effect settings.

Where is the Fractal VP4 made?

Guitar World lists the VP4's origin as the USA, while Guitar Player's review describes it as built in China and USA. The two reviews disagree on the exact split of where the unit is assembled.
