The Free The Tone SUGIZO SIGNATURE FLIGHT TIME / FT-2Y-S is a digital delay pedal in pedal format, built by Free The Tone in collaboration with the guitarist SUGIZO. It is a special version of the Flight Time FT-2Y, keeping the same circuit platform but adding preset data created by SUGIZO himself, a double FREE THE TONE and SUGIZO logo on the front panel, and a Solid Black enclosure in place of the standard model's Moss Green1.
The pedal's headline feature is its preset memory: 99 presets in total, made up of 74 user preset slots, 16 SUGIZO original preset data, and 9 factory presets1. For a player, that means the delay sounds SUGIZO uses are already loaded in the box, with plenty of empty slots left for your own. It was built as a limited edition of 100 units2.
Free The Tone lists the FT-2Y-S as production ended, at a list price of 64,900 yen including tax in Japan1. It was limited to 100 units2, so it is now a second-hand-market pedal.
What it is and what it does
The FT-2Y-S is the signature edition of the Flight Time FT-2Y, a digital delay pedal. Free The Tone describes it as a special model the company collaborated on with SUGIZO1. Where the regular Flight Time ships in a Moss Green enclosure, this one changes to Solid Black, the same color as a Flight Time Free The Tone had built specially for SUGIZO alone, and carries the double name logo of FREE THE TONE and SUGIZO on the front as the mark of the collaboration1.
The preset system is the practical difference for a player. Of the 99 presets, 16 hold SUGIZO's original preset data21, so his own delay settings can be recalled directly rather than dialed in by ear. The remaining slots split between 74 user presets and 9 factory presets1, which is a large amount of storage for a single delay pedal and suits players who set up different delay sounds per song or per gig.
The included certificate of authenticity carries SUGIZO's hand-written signature2, which matters to collectors as much as to players.
Power and connections
The FT-2Y-S runs on DC power from 9 to 12V, center negative, through a DC input jack intended for an AC adapter1. Free The Tone lists three adapter models for it, the FA-0905H-JA, FA-0905D-JA and FA-1220D-JA, all sold separately1. Current draw is about 400mA1, which is well above what a typical compact analog pedal needs, so it calls for a proper isolated supply rather than a small daisy chain.
For connections, the pedal has three 1/4-inch standard phone jacks: input, output, and HOLD1. Input impedance is 500K ohms or higher1, and maximum input level is +2dBu on the INST input and +13dBu on the LINE input1, so it accepts both instrument-level and line-level sources.
MIDI is on board with two 5-pin DIN connectors, MIDI IN and MIDI THRU1. That lets you switch presets remotely from a MIDI controller and pass the MIDI signal through to another piece of gear, which is useful in a larger switching rig.
| Connection | Specification |
|---|---|
| Audio jacks | 1/4-inch x 3 (input, output, HOLD)1 |
| MIDI | 5-pin DIN x 2 (IN, THRU)1 |
| Input impedance | 500K ohms or higher1 |
| Max input level | INST +2dBu / LINE +13dBu1 |
| Power | DC 9 to 12V, center negative, adapter sold separately1 |
| Current draw | approx. 400mA1 |
Signature edition versus the standard Flight Time FT-2Y
The standard Flight Time FT-2Y is the same digital delay platform. The FT-2Y-S differs from it in the ways Free The Tone itself lays out34:
| Flight Time FT-2Y | SUGIZO FT-2Y-S | |
|---|---|---|
| Enclosure color | Moss Green1 | Solid Black1 |
| Front panel | Free The Tone branding | Double FREE THE TONE and SUGIZO logo1 |
| SUGIZO preset data | not part of the standard model | preset data by SUGIZO2 |
| Edition | standard production | limited to 100 units2 |
| Certificate | not included | signed by SUGIZO2 |
The two also differ in power specification. The FT-2Y-S takes DC 9 to 12V1, while Free The Tone's FT-2Y page lists a DC 9V AC adapter for that model5. When Pedal of the Day reviewed the FT-2Y in 2017, it reported:
"Power Consumption : DC12V, approx. 400 mA(max)."
So the roughly 400mA draw is common to both, while the accepted voltage range differs between the pages. Free The Tone's FT-2Y pages also describe the pedal's REC & Repeat function, which lets a player record a phrase and repeat it5. Anyone buying either pedal second-hand should read the marking on the unit itself.
The FT-2Y carries a REC & REPEAT function5, a feature of the Flight Time platform the signature edition shares as the same base pedal.
What comes in the box
Alongside the pedal, Free The Tone includes1:
- Original sticker
- Rubber feet x 4
- Supplementary preset data manual
- Website access card
- Safety precautions sheet
- Warranty card
The website access card ties into the preset system, pointing the owner to the preset data resources, and the supplementary manual covers the SUGIZO preset data in detail1.

Questions
How many presets does the Free The Tone SUGIZO Flight Time have?
The FT-2Y-S holds 99 presets in total: 74 user preset slots, 16 preset data created by SUGIZO himself, and 9 factory presets. The SUGIZO presets are the signature edition's main distinction, giving players his delay sounds ready to load.
What power supply does the FT-2Y-S need?
It runs on 9 to 12V DC, center negative, through a DC input jack for an AC adapter, and draws about 400mA. The adapter is sold separately; Free The Tone lists the FA-0905H-JA, FA-0905D-JA and FA-1220D-JA models. A standard low-current 9V supply will not cover it.
Does the Flight Time FT-2Y-S have MIDI?
Yes. It has two 5-pin DIN connectors, MIDI IN and MIDI THRU, so it can receive MIDI program changes and clock and pass the signal on to further MIDI gear in a larger rig.
Is the SUGIZO Signature Flight Time still made?
No. Free The Tone lists the FT-2Y-S as production ended. It was a limited run of 100 units, priced at 64,900 yen including tax in Japan, so finding one means the second-hand market.
What is the difference between the Flight Time FT-2Y and the SUGIZO FT-2Y-S?
The FT-2Y-S is a collaboration version of the FT-2Y with 16 SUGIZO preset data, a double FREE THE TONE and SUGIZO logo on the front, a Solid Black enclosure instead of the standard Moss Green, and a certificate signed by SUGIZO. It was limited to 100 units.
