Free The Tone Tri-Avatar Multi-Dimensional Chorus

Chorus

The Free The Tone Tri-Avatar Multi-Dimensional Chorus is a chorus pedal, an effect that doubles the guitar's signal with a modulated copy to add width, thickness and movement to the sound. Its name points to how it is built: on That Pedal Show, Mick Taylor explained that the pedal runs three phases of modulation, "which is why it's called try avatar because it's three phases"1. Free The Tone also makes the pedal in TA-1H and TA-2H versions, covered on their own pages.

What it does

A chorus pedal like the Tri-Avatar sits in the family of chorus pedals used to fatten clean tones and add dimension to lead sounds. What sets the Tri-Avatar apart, according to That Pedal Show, is that it uses three phases of modulation rather than a single modulated voice, which is the origin of the "Tri" in its name1.

Controls

The pedal's left-hand depth knob sets how strong the modulation is on the left side of the effect. As Mick Taylor put it while walking through the pedal: "this controls the depth of the modulation on the left hand side"1.

Review video

On That Pedal Show, Mick Taylor and Daniel Steinhardt walked through the Tri-Avatar, explaining the three-phase design behind its name and demonstrating the depth control on the left-hand side of the pedal1.
