The Friedman Amplification BE-OD is an analog overdrive pedal that, in Friedman's own words, "captures the tone of the now legendary Friedman BE-100 amplifier"1. Where most overdrive pedals are loose interpretations of an amp sound, this one is a floor version of a specific Friedman head, the BE-100, and Friedman markets it as delivering "Authentic British Overdrive Tones"1. It lists at $199.99 USD as of June 2026 and remains in production, with Friedman saying tens of thousands have sold worldwide12.
The pedal is aimed at players who want high-gain amp distortion from a clean or lightly breaking amp. Friedman describes its controls as taking you "from light, slightly broken up overdrives to straight up gain nirvana"1.
What it does: the BE-100 amp in a pedal
Friedman positions the BE-OD as the pedal form of the BE-100 amplifier, a head the company describes as having "graced the stages" of major players1. The pedal is designed to sit in front of an amp and supply that gain structure itself. In Pete Thorn's 2016 demo video, he ran it through the clean channel of a Suhr PT100 set barely on the edge of breaking up, and through a Suhr 68 set for a crunch tone, recording riffs into a looper so he could adjust the controls hands free4.
RockBoard's PedalPedia entry classifies the circuit as analog and lists the effect type as distortion3, which matches how the circuit actually works: an independent technical analysis found three separate clipping stages rather than the soft clipping of a typical low-gain overdrive5.
The controls: volume, gain, tight and a four-knob EQ
The control set is volume, gain, tight, bass, treble and presence1. That is a fuller EQ than most drive pedals carry, and it reflects the amp-style design.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Volume | Sets output level |
| Gain | Sets the amount of distortion; DIY Fever's analysis found it "somewhat increases the saturation, but the character of the sound remains the same throughout the range"5 |
| Tight | Trims low-end flab for a more defined attack6 |
| Bass | Low-end cut or boost |
| Treble | High-end cut or boost |
| Presence | Upper-mid and high sharpening |
On the four EQ knobs, the DIY Fever analysis notes they "are really nice to have but they are there only to tune the pedal and match the guitar and amp being used," rather than dramatically changing the pedal's character5. A related finding from the same circuit analysis: capacitor C13 "chops the high end harshness off and can be increased if you find the high end to be too rough"5.
Power: 9 to 18V, 11mA
Friedman specifies a 9 to 18V DC operating range with no battery option1, and RockBoard lists the current draw at 11mA3. The wide voltage range means it can run on a standard 9V supply or at 18V for additional headroom.
The BE-OD takes no battery at any voltage1. If you run it at 18V, you need a supply that provides 18V, or two 9V outputs combined, as the BE-OD Deluxe does with its included splitter cable2.
Inside the circuit: op-amps and three clipping stages
The DIY Fever technical analysis identified three places in the circuit where diodes clip the signal to produce distortion5:
- A pair of red LEDs in the feedback loop of op-amp U1.25
- A pair of BAV99 diodes (or a quartet of 1N4148s) in the feedback loop of U2.157
- A pair of red LEDs between U2.2 and U3.1 in a shunt-to-ground configuration5
The analysis notes that LEDs "produce distortion that's different than other diode types and has slightly harsher or aggressive character to them," typically associated with solid state distortion5. The op-amps are TL072 and TL074 types7, and Ana Sounds' technical write-up counts four gain stages in the pedal8. The Guitar FX Layouts blog, which documented a vero build of the circuit, also noted transistors wired as clipping diodes with only two terminals connected in some versions7.
The DIY Fever author experimented with a mod replacing the LEDs with a BS250 MOSFET in series with a germanium diode, finding that "MOSFETs clip very differently, producing warmer and more gradual clipping that resembles how overdriven tubes clip," and that the mod made the pedal sound more like a regular plexi at lower gain levels5.
History and versions
The BE-OD was designed by David Friedman7. Its circuit is closely related to Friedman's Dirty Shirley pedal: the DIY Fever analysis describes the two circuits as "mostly the same," with shared DIY boards that unify them5.
The main offshoot is the BE-OD Deluxe, a dual-channel version announced in November 20189. Friedman says the Deluxe "employs the exact same circuit as the original BE-OD," with controls that add a middle knob and a three-position tight switch2. Delicious Audio reported that Channel 1 is identical to the original and Channel 2 is voiced with slightly lower gain9. A one-channel version, the original BE-OD, continues alongside it10.
What reviewers said
MusicRadar's review team called it "a cracking all-round distortion," noting that "its defined bite and increased output are very noticeable and the tight control removes flab while retaining character across the gain spectrum"11. The same outlet's distortion buying guide adds that "the tight control comes in very handy for a more defined attack"6.
Pete Thorn, reviewing the BE-OD Deluxe on his YouTube channel, said of the two-channel version: "I really like it you know I'm a big fan of the original pedal and this one lives up to all the expectations that I would" have for it12.
"One of the best things is that the bass notes don't get mushy with max gain. Bass notes stay tight, clear, and punchy."
The same blog's earlier vero layout had a practical flaw: builders reported "Great tone but no volume, only unity with vol on full," which was addressed in a layout update shown as of December 20177.
Who uses it
A Sweetwater demo video from October 2018 presents the pedal "in honor of one of Dave's endorsees mr. Jerry Cantrell"13. Friedman's product pages for the BE-OD and BE-OD Deluxe describe the BE-100 amplifier as having graced major stages, without naming a full artist roster12.

Questions
Does the Friedman BE-OD take a battery?
No. Friedman specifies that the BE-OD can be powered between 9 and 18V DC and takes no battery, so it needs a power supply or a pedalboard power unit. The BE-OD Deluxe is specified for 18V DC and also takes no battery.
Is the BE-OD the same circuit as the Dirty Shirley?
According to an independent technical analysis of the circuit, the BE-OD and Dirty Shirley circuits are mostly the same, and shared DIY boards exist that unify the two. Friedman itself says the BE-OD Deluxe uses the exact same circuit as the original BE-OD.
What does the tight knob do on the BE-OD?
The tight control trims low-end flab so the attack stays defined. MusicRadar's reviewers found it removes flab while retaining character across the gain range, and their buying guide notes it comes in very handy for a more defined attack.
Is the Friedman BE-OD true bypass?
Yes. Friedman's product page lists true bypass switching for the BE-OD, and the BE-OD Deluxe carries the same true bypass switching.
Where is the Friedman BE-OD made?
Friedman states the BE-OD is built in the USA using premium worldwide components, and the BE-OD Deluxe is assembled in the USA.
