Fulltone Custom Shop Mini DejaVibe Mk II

The Fulltone Custom Shop Mini DejaVibe Mk II is a vibrato pedal from Fulltone, a smaller-box version of the company's DejaVibe, a pedal line built to recreate the Uni-Vibe sound. Like the original Uni-Vibe circuit, it uses light: a lamp and photo resistors modulate the signal to produce the swirling chorus and vibrato textures players associate with late-1960s psychedelic guitar¹.

What it does

The Mini DejaVibe Mk II is a vibe pedal, meaning it sits in the same family as the Shin-ei Uni-Vibe and its many descendants. It produces a modulated, phase-shifting sweep that can run as chorus (a mixed, diluted effect) or as true vibrato (pitch wobble only). On That Pedal Show, Dan and Mick presented it as the compact current version of the Fulltone DejaVibe line, noting that "the new mini deja a vibe is a smaller box" than the previous version¹.

The point Fulltone's founder Mike Fuller emphasizes most is the component at the heart of the circuit. As the presenters put it, "mike is very passionate about the fact this is the only one that uses the right custom-designed photo resistors"¹. Photo resistors are the light-sensitive elements that give the original Uni-Vibe circuit its characteristic sweep, and Fulltone's claim is that its custom-designed versions capture that behavior more faithfully than the substitutes used in many other vibe pedals.

For players comparing Uni-Vibe style pedals, the Mini DejaVibe Mk II belongs to a crowded field that includes the Fulltone MDV3, the Fulltone MDV-2 Mini Deja Vibe, the Voodoo Lab Micro Vibe, the JAM Pedals RetroVibe and the Strymon UltraViolet Vintage Vibe, among others.
