The Fulltone MDV-2 Mini Deja Vibe is an analog effect pedal from Fulltone that follows the original 1960s Univibe circuit, including what Fulltone calls its most important parts: the photocells. It puts the Uni-Vibe sound, the swirling vibrato and rotary character heard across 1960s recordings, into an enclosure RockBoard's PedalPedia describes as no bigger than a standard wah-wah pedal1. Pedal of the Day reviewed it as a route to "that coveted '60s Uni-Vibe sound"2.

What it does

The MDV-2 is a Uni-Vibe-style pedal: RockBoard's PedalPedia describes it as producing "the lush organic sounds of a perfect 'vintage Univibe clone'"1. Its effect types are listed as vibrato, rotary and expression, so it can be played with an expression pedal for hands-free speed control1. For players comparing it with other ways to get this sound, the site covers related designs on the Vibrato Pedals page, and Fulltone's later take on the circuit in the Fulltone Custom Shop Mini DejaVibe Mk II.

Controls

The speed control is the heart of the pedal. RockBoard's PedalPedia says the Mini Deja Vibe's dual pot gives access to all speeds from slowest to fastest, all with a perfect sweep and no abrupt speed changes1.

Photocells and circuit

The photocells are the detail Fulltone emphasizes. The MDV-2 is described as true to the original 1960s Univibe circuit, including the most important parts, the photocells, which are 100% Fulltone-designed1. In a photo-cell-based vibe, the light hitting those cells is what shapes the effect, so the cells carry much of the pedal's character.

Power

The pedal runs on 9V DC, center negative1. Pedal of the Day lists a power supply as included with the MDV22.

Versions

The MDV-2 is a compact take on the Deja Vibe, covering three effect types: vibrato, rotary and expression1. Fulltone also makes a later Deja Vibe, covered separately on the Fulltone MDV3 page.

What reviewers said

Pedal of the Day's verdict was warm: "The Min Deja Vibe 2 is an incredible work of sonic art from Fulltone"2.
