The GOAT Generator is an analog distortion pedal made by the Japanese maker GOAT. It runs on 9V DC center negative power and draws 200mA1.
What it does
RockBoard's PedalPedia lists the Generator's effect type simply as distortion1. What sets the circuit apart, according to Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio, is how it is built rather than what it models. The pedal uses:
- multi-stage amplification
- an irregular equalizer circuit
- automatic switching of gain depending on input level2
That last point means the pedal responds to how hard the guitar is played, changing its gain staging with the input signal instead of applying one fixed amount of clipping. Players who like a distortion that cleans up and opens up with picking dynamics will recognize what that design is after2.
De Gregorio also noted the practical changes GOAT made in moving the design into a pedal: the company "improves the pattern design and power supply circuit to minimize noise and adds true bypass"2. True bypass means the pedal is removed from the signal path entirely when off.
Power and specifications
At 200mA, the Generator draws more current than many compact pedals. Check that your power supply output can supply it before adding it to a daisy chain.
GOAT publishes an English manual and a Japanese manual for the Generator as PDF downloads1.
