The GUP Tech VeJ3 Eggplant Douche Edition is an amp-in-a-box preamp distortion: a pedal built to put the feel of a complete amplifier on a pedalboard rather than to layer gain on top of an existing amp sound. GUP Tech describes it plainly: "This Amp in a box Preamp-Distortion brings a complete amp feeling to your pedalboard."1

It is the Douche Edition version of the GUP Tech VeJ3, GUP Tech's line of limited or special-run finishes on its regular pedals.1

What it does and how it works

The VeJ3 is aimed at high-gain players. GUP Tech says the pedal "brings three dynamic distortion modes for the more aggressive metal tones," which makes it the metal-leaning entry among the maker's amp-in-a-box pedals1. Three modes give a player distinct gain structures to choose from without stacking extra pedals.

Because it is a preamp, not just a gain stage, it carries a full EQ section. GUP Tech says that "with a full EQ and very low noise, it sounds great on clean channel or directly in the FX Loop return of any amp"1. That second option matters: plugged into an amp's effects loop return, the VeJ3 replaces the amp's own preamp entirely, so the tone shaping happens in the pedal and the amp's power section simply amplifies the result. Into the front of a clean channel, it behaves more like a conventional distortion pedal with deeper tone control.

Where the VeJ3 sits in the VeJ series

GUP Tech positions the VeJ3 "just between the VeJ2 and VeJ4" in its VeJ series2. The series runs from softer to harder sounds:

VeJ2Amp in a box preamp-overdriveThe overdrive end of the series3
VeJ3Amp in a box preamp distortionThree distortion modes for aggressive metal tones2
VeJ4Amp in a box distortionThree drive modes: Classic Blues Tone, Distortion, and Thick Distortion Channel4

The VeJ2 covers overdrive territory, the VeJ4 goes further into distortion with a blues mode included, and the VeJ3 sits in the middle as the dedicated metal option. The standard VeJ3 comes in Magenta and Army Green finishes2; the Eggplant Douche Edition is its special-run counterpart.

The Douche Edition line itself has history. The VeJ2 Douche Edition was released on 7 May 2022, "with sparkling broccoli and names," and later received a new Broccoli design in a January 2021 update note on the same page3. That edition is now sold out3, which is typical of the line: these are limited runs alongside the standard models.

Power and build

The VeJ3 Eggplant Douche Edition runs on 9V DC with a center negative plug, the standard for modern pedal power supplies, and draws only 18mA1. For comparison, the VeJ2 Douche Edition draws 12mA and the VeJ4 draws 11mA43, so all three are easy on a pedalboard power supply. The VeJ2 Douche Edition also accepts 12 to 18V DC safely, though GUP Tech notes "you won't get anything more at 9+VDC"3; the VeJ3 page lists 9V DC only1.

The VeJ3 Eggplant Douche Edition is a Douche Edition run, and the VeJ2 Douche Edition before it sold out. If the finish matters to you, the standard VeJ3 in Magenta or Army Green is the regular-production alternative2.

Every GUP Tech pedal, the VeJ3 Eggplant Douche Edition included, is built by the maker itself: "All of our pedals are made by us in Saguenay, Québec, Canada"1.

Questions

Where is the GUP Tech VeJ3 made?

GUP Tech builds all of its pedals itself in Saguenay, Quebec, Canada, and the VeJ3 Eggplant Douche Edition is no exception. The maker states this directly on its product page, so every unit comes from the same small workshop rather than from outsourced production.

Can the VeJ3 go in an amp's effects loop?

Yes. GUP Tech says the VeJ3, with its full EQ and very low noise, sounds great on a clean channel or plugged directly into the FX Loop return of any amp. Running it into a loop return treats it more like the preamp section of a full amplifier.

How much current does the VeJ3 draw?

The VeJ3 Eggplant Douche Edition draws 18mA, according to GUP Tech's product page. That is low enough that it shares easily with other pedals on a typical isolated power supply, and it sits between the VeJ2 Douche Edition at 12mA and the VeJ4 at 11mA.

What power supply does the VeJ3 Eggplant need?

It runs on 9V DC with a center negative plug, the standard arrangement for most modern pedal power supplies. GUP Tech lists this on the product page. Any typical 9V center negative supply or pedalboard output with enough current for its 18mA draw will power it.

How many distortion modes does the VeJ3 have?

Three. GUP Tech describes the VeJ3 as bringing three dynamic distortion modes aimed at the more aggressive metal tones. The maker positions the pedal between the VeJ2 preamp-overdrive and the VeJ4 distortion in the VeJ series.
