The Haggtronix Mothman Dual Drive is a guitar effects pedal built around two fuzz/boost circuits side by side, each with its own Volume knob and on/off footswitch. Run one side alone for a fuzzy boost, or stack the two together to create fuzz and distortion. It sits in the territory covered by fuzz pedals and boost pedals, with the gain structure shaped by how hard you drive it.1
What it does
Each of the two circuits is controlled by a single Volume knob and switched on and off with its own footswitch, so the two sides can be used separately or together. Haggtronix describes the idea as elementary gain staging: two fuzzy boosts that create fuzz and distortion when stacked.1
The pedal responds to the guitar's volume knob. Premier Guitar reported that it is easy to create clear crunchy overdriven sounds with the guitar's volume rolled back, or to access full-on fuzz and distortion at maximum. That puts it in the same working range as overdrive pedals and distortion pedals, with the cleanup handled at the guitar rather than on the pedal.1
Controls
| Control | Function |
|---|---|
| Volume (circuit one) | Sets the output level of the first fuzz/boost circuit |
| Footswitch (circuit one) | Switches the first circuit on and off |
| Volume (circuit two) | Sets the output level of the second fuzz/boost circuit |
| Footswitch (circuit two) | Switches the second circuit on and off |
There are no tone, gain or bias controls: the amount of distortion comes from stacking the two circuits and from the guitar's volume knob.1
Design and power
The pedal PCB was designed by Paul Haggard of Haggtronix. It is housed in a 1590bbs enclosure finished in Chameleon Cherry Violet sparkle powder coating. The pedal operates on a standard center negative 9V to 18V pedal power supply.1
