The Hello Sailor Effects Abbey Road Hybrid Fuzz is a fuzz pedal that pairs a germanium OC140 transistor with a silicon BC182L, a hybrid design that blends the two transistor types in one circuit1. It sits alongside other fuzzes from the same maker, including the ShipWreck Fuzzstortion, the Monmouth Octave Fuzz and the Leia Rebel-Rebel, and shares its territory with the ZVex Abbey Road Fuzz Factory 7, another fuzz named after the London studio2.
Controls
The pedal keeps its control layout simple: a Volume control and a Tone Focus switch with three positions covering Mids, Highs and Lows1. Reviewing the pedal for Guitar Pedal X in November 2023, Stefan Karlsson described the switch as "a really cleverly calibrated 3-way EQ switch - where I like it best in its Up / Mids Focused position"1.
What reviewers said
Guitar Pedal X compared the Abbey Road Hybrid Fuzz with three other germanium and silicon hybrid fuzzes: the MXR Custom Shop Hybrid Fuzz, the Spaceman Charon and the Loe Sounds BLow. Karlsson judged it "probably the smoothest overall" of the four, and was critical of the MXR by comparison, writing that "the Hello Sailor Effects Abbey Road Hybrid kind of shows up the MXR for how that should have sounded"1.
"The Abbey Road is probably the smoothest overall - while the Charon can pretty smooth too."
Availability
The Abbey Road Hybrid Fuzz was listed at £200 / $260 when Guitar Pedal X covered it in November 20231. Karlsson also noted that his own unit is a one-off: "mine is a very unique version of Abbey Road - and there are no demos of that particular one", a custom white and red burst finish with an anchor decal1. Production units may therefore differ in appearance from the pedal shown in that review.
