The Hello Sailor Effects Höfner Harmonic Preamp is a tone-enhancing preamp and boost pedal that adapts a circuit with a long history: the preamp circuits Höfner wired into its electric guitars in the 1950s and 60s to improve and enhance the guitars' output. Hello Sailor Effects' Joe adapted the design into a stand-alone pedal, building each unit with rare NOS (new old stock) Silicon or Germanium transistors1. It sits in the wider field of preamp pedals and boost pedals.

Where the circuit comes from

The design dates back to the 1950s and 60s, when the German guitar maker Höfner, originally Austro-Hungarian and dating to 1887, designed preamp circuits to be wired into its electric guitars of that time to improve and enhance their output. Those early circuits were all Germanium, and Guitar Pedal X's reviewer Stefan Karlsson describes what they brought: "Those early circuits were all Germanium and imparted a certain Germanium grit and added harmonics, but otherwise remained colourless"1.

In the pedal, the original character carries over. Karlsson writes that "the preamp delivered a distinct, warm, and slightly compressed colour - which otherwise did not alter the core sound of" the guitar1.

Silicon and Germanium versions

The pedal is available in both Silicon and Germanium varieties, each built with rare NOS transistors that Hello Sailor Effects' Joe has uncovered. Both varieties were priced the same at the time of the review1.

Germaniumrare NOS Germanium transistor£2001

The transistor in each unit varies. The reviewer's Silicon unit carries an RCA 2N3440, and he notes it "sounds very Germanium indeed"1. His model also includes a variety of vintage capacitors in blue and yellow, including what he calls an interesting "log-bundle" of yellows, and "Skull LED Caps"1.

How it sounds and how the knob works

The single control is logarithmic in nature, ramping up rapidly after noon. Karlsson describes its sweep: "Its single control is subtle to 1 o'clock, pronounced at 2, and fierce at maximum"1.

What sets it apart from other boosts is its tonal balance. Where typical Germanium boosts add sparkle and brightness, Karlsson found that "while this one if anything stays somewhat neutral, and can sound darker even as you crank up the single knob"1.

"The Höfner Harmonic Preamp is distinctly different to all my other boosts - and in my rig in particular - turbo-charges"
Stefan Karlsson, Guitar Pedal X1

He found it pairs beautifully with the Thorpy FX Heavy Water Germanium Boost, which it turbo-charges in his rig1.

Questions

What is the Höfner Harmonic Preamp circuit?

It is a preamp circuit that Höfner designed to be wired into its electric guitars in the 1950s and 60s, to improve and enhance the guitars' output. The early circuits were all Germanium, adding Germanium grit and extra harmonics while otherwise staying colourless. Hello Sailor Effects adapted the design into a stand-alone pedal using rare NOS Silicon or Germanium transistors.

What is the difference between the Silicon and Germanium versions?

Both versions carry the same adapted Höfner Harmonic Preamp circuit, but each is built with a different rare NOS transistor: one Silicon, one Germanium. Both varieties were priced the same at £200 when Guitar Pedal X reviewed the pedal in June 2026. The reviewer's Silicon unit, built with an RCA 2N3440, was said to sound very Germanium indeed.

How much does the Hello Sailor Effects Höfner Harmonic Preamp cost?

Guitar Pedal X reported in June 2026 that both the Silicon and Germanium varieties are priced at the same £200 each, as listed on the Hello Sailor Effects webstore.

Does it add sparkle like other Germanium boosts?

No. Guitar Pedal X's reviewer found that while typical Germanium boosts add sparkle and brightness, this one stays somewhat neutral and can even sound darker as the single knob is cranked. He described it as distinctly different to all his other boosts.

Who designed the Hello Sailor Effects Höfner Harmonic Preamp?

Hello Sailor Effects' Joe adapted the original Höfner Harmonic Guitar Preamp design into pedal format, building each unit with rare NOS Silicon or Germanium transistors.
