The Ibanez No.84 Double Sound is a wah and fuzz combination pedal made by Ibanez in Japan from 1974 to 1984. It puts a wah pedal and a fuzz on one unit, and its fuzz section offers two octave fuzz settings: one with scooped mids and one with a really thick mid-range1. It was never re-issued, and production ended in 19841.

Fuzz circuit lineage from the No.83

The Double Sound has a direct connection to one of the rarest pedals in Ibanez's first series. ToneHome states that "The Fuzz section of the split board version is identical to the ephemeral and extremely sought after Ibanez No.83 Fuzz"12. That means the earliest version of the Double Sound carries the same fuzz circuit as the No.83 (New) Fuzz, a fuzz pedal produced in 1974 and rated very high in collectibility, with no re-issue ever made2.

For a player, this matters in two ways. First, the Double Sound's fuzz voicings come from a circuit that collectors prize on its own. Second, the No.83's own controls hint at how the family worked: on the No.83, the Fuzz knob adjusts the volume, interchanged with a Balance pot2. The No.83 was made in Japan, and ToneHome's shop listing as of August 7, 2026 showed one example for sale in very good condition, dated Japan 19762.

The three versions

ToneHome notes three versions available across the production run, and they differ in circuit board layout and in whether an LED is fitted1:

VersionYearsLEDCircuit boardAvailability
v11974 to 1977NoSplit pcb for Wah and FuzzRare
v21977 to 1978NoSingle pcb for Wah and FuzzVery rare
v31979 to 1984YesSingle pcbGood

The split board matters most to collectors and players chasing the No.83 circuit, since it is the split board version whose fuzz section is identical to the No.831. Version 2 is the hardest to find, and version 3, made for the last six years of the run, is the one most likely to turn up for sale1.

The three versions are not interchangeable for a player chasing a specific circuit: only the split board v1 shares its fuzz section with the No.83 Fuzz1.

Collectibility and prices

ToneHome rates the No.84 Double Sound's collectibility as high1. The pedal's list prices, given in German marks as the source states them, rose across the run: 178 DM in 1974, 218 DM in 1979, and 288 DM in 19841. Because the pedal was never re-issued, used originals are the only route to the circuit, and availability varies sharply by version, from good for v3 to very rare for v21.

The Double Sound sits in a wider family of vintage Ibanez fuzzes and wah-fuzz combinations, including the No. 90 Fuzz & Wa, the No. 58 Standard Wau Fuzz, the No.59 Standard Fuzz and the No. 91 Tone Machine. For the broader effect, see Fuzz Pedals and Wah-Wah Pedals.

Questions

Has the Ibanez Double Sound been reissued?

No. ToneHome records the No.84 Double Sound as re-issued: no, and the pedal was discontinued in 1984 after a ten-year run from 1974. The related No.83 Fuzz, whose circuit the Double Sound's fuzz section shares, was also never re-issued. Players who want the sound today have to look for a used original, with the third version the easiest of the three to find.

How do the three versions of the Ibanez No.84 differ?

Version 1, from 1974 to 1977, has no LED and a split circuit board for the wah and fuzz sections. Version 2, from 1977 to 1978, also has no LED but moves to a single board. Version 3, from 1979 to 1984, adds an LED and keeps the single board. ToneHome rates availability as good for v3, rare for v1 and very rare for v2.

What fuzz sounds does the Ibanez Double Sound have?

The fuzz section has two octave fuzz settings, one with scooped mids and one with a really thick mid-range, according to ToneHome. The name Double Sound refers to this pair of voicings, and the pedal pairs them with a wah section on the same unit.

Is the Ibanez No.84 Double Sound collectible?

ToneHome rates its collectibility as high. The three versions are not equally hard to find: version 3 is described as good in availability, version 1 as rare, and version 2 as very rare. The related No.83 Fuzz, whose circuit the Double Sound's fuzz section shares, is rated very high in collectibility.

Where can I find a manual for the Ibanez Double Sound?

ToneHome hosts a scan of the Ibanez Double Sound owner's manual dated 1978 as a PDF on its No.84 Double Sound product page, so the manual is available to download from that page.
