The J. Rockett Audio Designs HRM, short for Hot Rubber Monkey, is an analog D-Style overdrive pedal. Delicious Audio describes it as "a re-creation of the overdriven sounds of the legendary D style ODS amp but with the HRM EQ mod", placing it among the Dumble-style drives players reach for when they want that amp's overdriven voice from a pedal rather than the amp itself1. It sits in the wider family of overdrive pedals, alongside other D-Style designs from the same maker such as The Dude.
The V2 version
The HRM is a D-style overdrive pedal: J. Rockett Audio Designs describes it as "a re-creation of the overdriven sounds of the legendary D style ODS amp but with the HRM EQ mod"1. The circuit is analog, with an 18mA current draw1. It runs on a 9 volt negative tip adapter through a 5.5mm x 2.1mm jack1. Premier Guitar has also covered the pedal in its news pages2.
The HRM V2 is the current version of the pedal. Earlier versions differ from it in tone and parts, so a used example may not match the V2's circuit.
Who it is for
Premier Guitar's coverage of the HRM V2 put its audience plainly: "HRM V2 is perfect for blues and rock players or players that love that Dumble sound"2. In other words, it is aimed at players chasing the overdriven D-style voice at blues and rock gain levels, rather than a generic transparent boost or a high-gain distortion.
