The J. Rockett Uni-Verb is a dual-effect pedal from J. Rockett Audio Designs that puts a photocell analog Uni-Vibe-style chorus/vibrato and a spring reverb in one box. J. Rockett describes it as a painstakingly accurate photocell analog vibe based on the original Uni-Vibe pedal, with a spring reverb added1. Premier Guitar's John Bohlinger summed up the combination as "a spring reverb tank for adding boing-y goodness to this stompbox's swirling, Doppler-like ear candy"2.
It arrived in July 2022 as the second pedal in J. Rockett's Classic Series, priced at $449.0034, and it is built in the USA5.
What it is and what it does
The vibe side follows the classic Shin-Ei/Univox Uni-Vibe: an optical circuit with four light-dependent resistors arranged around a bulb, the same photocell approach as the vintage units95. The reverb side emulates a spring reverb tank, in the style of the tanks built into amps a decade before the '60s Uni-Vibe itself57. Where many modulation-plus-reverb combo pedals aim at ambient or psychedelic territory, Delicious Audio noted that the Uni-Verb takes the idea in a more classic direction8.
The two effects are not locked together. An effects loop built into the pedal separates the vibe and reverb, so you can use both at once or either one on its own7. On Premier Guitar's demo page, John Bohlinger confirmed you can use the two effects individually or simultaneously2.
The controls
J. Rockett's product page lists the controls1, and the press coverage fills out how they behave:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Intensity | Controls the intensity of the chorus and vibe "Turnaround"1 |
| Speed | Sets the vibe/chorus rate; runs faster and slower than a classic Uni-Vibe unit6 |
| Chorus Mix | Blends dry signal with wet signal; affects the chorus only, not the vibe8 |
| Output | Overall output volume10 |
| Dwell | Controls the length of the reverb tail110 |
| Reverb | Controls the intensity of the reverb1 |
There is also an internal trimpot for adjusting the vibe tone9. The vibrato/chorus selection is footswitchable, an improvement over the original Uni-Vibe's panel switch8.
The pedal carries three footswitches: one engages the reverb, one handles vibrato/chorus selection, and one is the bypass105.
There is no expression pedal input for speed. Premier Guitar's reviewer called this a functional shortcoming: "Sadly, there is no expression pedal option for the rate, which, functionally speaking, makes the Uni-Verb a little less"4.
Power: standard 9V, run internally at 24V
The original Uni-Vibe ran its circuit at 24V. The Uni-Verb does the same, but you do not need a special supply for it: J. Rockett designed it to run off a standard negative-tip 9V feed, with a charge pump inside bumping the voltage up to 24V1. Gearnews made the point plainly: it runs like the original vintage effect internally at 24V, but on a modern 9V power supply7.
J. Rockett's instruction is explicit: "DO NOT TRY TO POWER THE UNI-VERB WITH 24v OR ANYTHING OTHER THAN A NEGATIVE TIP OR 5.5/2.1mm 9v TYPICAL SUPPLY."1
The pedal runs on a 9V mains supply only, with no battery option9, and the adaptor is not supplied510.
Analog vibe, digital reverb
The split between the two sections matters to players comparing circuits. Premier Guitar's reviewer was clear on the architecture: "Though its reverb component is digital, Uni-Verb's modulation section is not a digital facsimile." The reverb is generated by an Accutronics Digi-Log module, which the same reviewer described as "immersive, engaging and fun"4. Guitar.com's Richard Purvis spotted the real photocell assembly inside: four LDRs huddled around a bulb, the distinctive arrangement of the original design9.
Where it came from
The Uni-Verb was a five year project for J. Rockett Audio Designs, led by designer Chris Van Tassel1121012. Van Tassel described the goal: "This was a five year project to create the most authentic Univibe pedal we could while adding modern features players wo[uld want]"13. Delicious Audio reported that it took the Rockett engineers five years to perfect the circuit and make it sound like the Shin-Ei/Univox original, with the vibe section made more musical and useable than the original in the process8.
The pedal launched in July 2022313 as the second pedal in the Classic Series3, and it was available from launch at $449.00313. Its enclosure is an homage to the original Uni-Vibe, with chicken head knobs and clock-style markers, in a hefty box that Premier Guitar's reviewer said feels more like a high-quality 1950s test instrument than a guitar pedal4. Dimensions are 4.75 x 5.25 x 1.25 inches, 2.25 inches to the top of the knob, and it weighs 2 lbs81.
What reviewers made of it
MusicRadar's verdict on the tone was direct: "It gets the classic Uni-Vibe tones right." The review credited the pedal's success to perfecting the sounds of the original '60s Uni-Vibe and of a classic spring reverb tank from the decade previous5. Pedal of the Day found it recreates the classic sounds you would expect, with the added spring reverb making it distinct, and noted the wider speed range as a practical plus over a vintage unit6.
The one recurring criticism in the coverage is the missing expression input for speed4. Otherwise, reviewers treated the Uni-Verb as a faithful, flexible take on the vibrato and reverb combination, closer in spirit to a vintage Uni-Vibe plus a spring tank than to a modern ambient pedal8.

Questions
Is the J. Rockett Uni-Verb true bypass?
Yes. MusicRadar, Guitar World and Premier Guitar all list the Uni-Verb as true bypass. It is a three-footswitch pedal: one switch engages the reverb, one selects vibrato or chorus, and one is the master bypass, so you can leave either effect armed and bring the whole pedal in and out with your signal untouched when off.
Can you use the vibe and reverb on the Uni-Verb separately?
Yes. The pedal has a built-in effects loop that separates the vibe and reverb sections, so you can run both effects together or use either one on its own. Each effect also has its own footswitch, so you can switch the reverb off and keep the vibe going, or the other way round.
Does the Uni-Verb have an expression pedal input for speed?
No. Premier Guitar's reviewer noted that there is no expression pedal option for the rate, and called that a functional shortcoming. Speed is set with a knob on the pedal itself, and the Uni-Verb will actually run its vibe and chorus faster and slower than a classic Uni-Vibe unit.
Is the Uni-Verb stereo?
No. The pedal has a mono guitar input and a mono output, plus a send and return for its internal effects loop. There is no stereo output, so it sits in a standard mono pedalboard chain like most Uni-Vibe-style pedals.
How much does the J. Rockett Uni-Verb weigh?
The Uni-Verb weighs 2 lbs, a figure given both by J. Rockett's own product page and by Delicious Audio. It sits in a hefty enclosure that Premier Guitar's reviewer compared to a high-quality 1950s test instrument, with chicken head knobs and clock-style markers as an homage to the original Uni-Vibe.
Who designed the J. Rockett Uni-Verb?
Chris Van Tassel of J. Rockett Audio Designs led the project. He described it as a five year project to create the most authentic Uni-Vibe pedal the company could, while adding modern features players would want, such as the footswitchable vibrato/chorus selection and the built-in effects loop.
