The SurfyPan is a Type-4 spring reverb tank made by Surfy Industries in partnership with Accutronics, the long-established spring tank manufacturer. Rather than sourcing a stock tank, Surfy went to Accutronics directly: "we spoke to Accutronics® directly and proposed to them that they make for us an upgraded 4AB3C1B spring pan"1. The result is an upgraded version of the 4AB3C1B, the tank format long associated with Fender-style spring reverb, built with increased quality materials for a fuller sound, a more reliable product, and a custom decay level1.
For a player, this is the replacement or upgrade tank for a spring reverb setup, and it is also the tank fitted inside Surfy's own reverb pedals. Two models are available1:
| Model | Decay response | Default tank in |
|---|---|---|
| Regular SurfyPan | Standard | SurfyBear Metal and SurfyBear Studio |
| SurfyPan Extra | Short Decay | SurfyBear Classic |
The Regular SurfyPan is the tank fitted by default in the SurfyBear Metal and SurfyBear Studio, while the SurfyPan Extra, with its short decay response, is "default in SurfyBear Classic"1. Players choosing between the two are effectively choosing decay length: the Extra's short decay sits on the tighter, more restrained end of what a spring tank does, while the Regular pan carries the standard response.
The two SurfyPan models are not interchangeable in character: the Extra is a short-decay tank and is the one supplied with the SurfyBear Classic, while the Regular pan ships in the SurfyBear Metal and SurfyBear Studio1.
If you are replacing the tank in one of Surfy's SurfyBear pedals or fitting a Type-4 tank elsewhere, the model to pick depends on the decay response you want, and the tank you are replacing. Both are covered on Surfy Industries' SurfyPan page1. For more on how tanks like this sit in a rig, see Reverb Pedals.
