J. Rockett Audio Designs PXO

The PXO is a signature overdrive and boost pedal from J. Rockett Audio Designs, built for guitarist Phil X and billed as the Phil X Signature Overdrive. It combines two effects in one box: an overdrive side and a boost side, with a switch that lets you choose whether the boost sits before or after the overdrive in the signal path. That pre or post choice changes how you can boost, EQ and overdrive your sound¹.

J. Rockett describes the pedal's character as "a lush, thick feel to the bottom end and a smooth top end that begs you to dig into the note"¹. When the pedal was unveiled on 30 September 2024, Guitar World reported it was promising to serve as "a superb drive that plays well with others"².

Controls

The two sides of the pedal have separate control sets, so the overdrive and the boost can be shaped independently¹.

The pre/post switch is the pedal's central idea: with the boost set before the overdrive it pushes the drive into more gain, and set after it acts as a level and tone lift on the overdriven signal. J. Rockett frames it as "variety in how you want to boost, EQ and overdrive"¹.

What reviewers said

Premier Guitar's reviewer came away impressed by how much range the pedal holds, finding that the way the controls interact is a large part of its appeal. "The range in each of the effects alone, and the surprising ways that the controls interact with each other, are what mak[e]..." the reviewer wrote, describing the PXO as exceptionally flexible and precise, like a surgeon's scalpel³.
