The JHS Panther Cub 500 is an analog delay pedal from JHS Pedals. The maker describes it as "a true bucket brigade analog delay that is driven by the legendary MN3005 chipset", the chip type long associated with dark, vintage-voiced delay repeats1. Alongside the core delay, JHS says it carries "onboard modulation, EQ, tap tempo and expression pedal abilities", and describes its repeats as "Smooth, dark, organic"1. It belongs to the wider family of delay pedals that use bucket brigade circuitry rather than digital processing.
What it does
As an analog delay, the Panther Cub 500 repeats your signal through a bucket brigade chip, and JHS positions the MN3005 chipset as the heart of that circuit1. The onboard modulation shapes the repeats, the EQ shapes their tone, and tap tempo sets the delay time by foot. An expression pedal input adds hands-free control of the pedal's parameters while you play1.
The Panther Cub line
The 500 sits in a line of Panther Cub delays that JHS has built in several forms:
| Version | Details |
|---|---|
| Panther Cub Delay (original) | Announced by JHS with a True Speed LED that "indicates rate of actual delay"2 |
| Panther Cub V1 | Four section "ratio control" giving quarter, dotted eighth, eighth and triplet divisions3 |
| Panther Cub V2 | 4 Position Ratio control (1/4, 1/8, dotted 1/8, Triplets), plus "Improved and Strengthened Feedback and Oscillation"4 |
| Panther Cub 500 | MN3005 bucket brigade analog delay with modulation, EQ, tap tempo and expression control1 |
The ratio division idea carried through the line: the V1's four section "ratio control" gives "quarter, dotted eighth, eighth and triplet divisions"3, and the V2 keeps the same four positions4. The V2 also came in a smaller enclosure; Pedal of the Day noted that JHS "produced the Panther Cub V2, which is half the size of the half-sized Panther Cub 1/1.5"5.
The Panther Cub V1 and V2 are earlier, separate pedals from the 500. Their controls, such as the four position ratio switch, are documented on their own product pages and may not match the 500's layout. See the JHS Pedals Panther Cub Analog Delay V2 for the later compact version.
