The JHS 3 Series Oil Can Delay is a compact delay pedal that recreates the sound of the vintage oil can delay, a short-lived echo technology from the late 1950s that players have rediscovered for its murky, wobbly character12. It is a digital pedal, but instead of aiming for clean, pristine repeats it is voiced after the syrupy, dark, wobbly echoes that oil can units produced, with elements of vibrato and slapback delay built into the effect13.

It sits in JHS's 3 Series, a line of affordable, simple pedals that the company builds in Kansas City, Missouri, and it lists at $99.00 USD1. The idea came from a meeting between JHS owner Josh Scott and Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, and Cline has used the pedal through the recording and touring process for Wilco's Cruel Country and their later release Cousin12.

What an oil can delay is

The original oil can delay was pioneered by Ray Lubow, patented in 1959, and used a drum and belt system rather than the tape loop of a tape echo4. It was a short-lived technology that has since been rediscovered for its unique sonic character2. Delicious Audio describes the sound the JHS pedal chases as "the syrupy, dark, and wobbly repeats generated by the semi-forgotten technology powering oil can delays"3.

For a player, that means this is not a clean, hi-fi echo. JHS describes it as "creating a truly unique echo effect with elements of vibrato and slapback delay"1, so the repeats move and darken as they decay rather than staying static.

The controls: Mix, Speed, Feedback and the +/- toggle

The pedal keeps the 3 Series formula of three knobs and one toggle, which JHS says offers a wide range of sounds for beginners and experienced players alike1.

ControlWhat it does
MIXControls the mix of echo and clean signal. Left is less, right is more.1
SPEEDControls the delay time, from 100ms to 330ms. Left is shorter, right is longer.1
FEEDBACKSets how many repeats. More feedback means the echoes keep going longer.3
+/- toggleSwitches modulation intensity: down is light movement, up is heavier movement.1

The modulation toggle is the key to the oil can character. In the down position the repeats get a light wobble; in the up position the movement is heavier, pushing the echo toward the unstable feel of the vintage units1. The 100ms to 330ms time range means the pedal lives in slapback and short-echo territory rather than long ambient delays1.

From Blackout Edition to regular 3 Series

The Oil Can Delay began as a limited edition. It was released in 2023 within Reverb.com's multi-builder Blackout Series promotion, and it was the first non-white pedal in the JHS 3 Series2. The idea for a delay inspired by the oil can sound was conceived in a meeting between Josh Scott and Nels Cline, reportedly brought up when the two met at Wilco's 2022 Solid Sound Fest2.

In February 2025 JHS released the same circuit as part of the regular 3 Series in a white case, alongside the Rotary Chorus and Tape Delay, bringing the 3 Series range to 16 pedals26. Delicious Audio reported in mid-2025 that the limited edition was "now becoming part of the regular 3 S" production3. The Blackout Edition and the white version share the same circuit, so the difference is the finish, not the sound2.

If you see a black Oil Can Delay for sale, it is the 2023 Reverb Blackout Series limited edition. The white version, sold through regular JHS dealers from 2025, is the same circuit26.

How it compares with other JHS 3 Series delays

The Oil Can Delay is one of several delay voices in the 3 Series, each aimed at a different echo style:

  • 3 Series Delay: a general-purpose digital delay with a Type toggle for clearer digital-voiced or darker analog-voiced repeats, and delay times from 80 to 800ms78
  • 3 Series Tape Delay: a digital circuit replicating the warm, rich tones of vintage tape machines9
  • 3 Series Glitch Delay: a digital delay with a more experimental, glitchy character10
  • 3 Series Oil Can Delay: the murkiest and shortest of the group, focused on wobbly, vibrato-tinged repeats from 100ms to 330ms1

Compared with the standard 3 Series Delay's 80 to 800ms range7, the Oil Can's 100ms to 330ms window is much narrower, which suits slapback and short throwback echoes rather than long leads.

What reviewers said

Guitar World's reviewer, writing about oil can echoes in 2026, called the JHS "the ridiculously well-priced 3 Series Oil Can Delay" and said that for players wanting oil can sound on a budget, "JHS has you covered"11. The same review noted the pedal's $99 price point alongside other oil can-inspired units at much higher prices11.

Guitar Pedal X reported the February 2025 expansion of the 3 Series to 16 pedals, adding the Rotary Chorus, Tape Delay and Oil Can Delay to what it described as JHS's $99 budget line, with international dealers expected to receive the three new pedals shortly6.

Questions

What is an oil can delay?

An oil can delay is a vintage echo technology pioneered by Ray Lubow and patented in 1959, using a drum and belt system instead of tape. It produced a murky, wobbly echo that players have rediscovered for its unique character. The JHS 3 Series Oil Can Delay is a digital pedal voiced after that sound.

Is the JHS Oil Can Delay analog or digital?

It is a digital delay voiced after the vintage oil can delay. JHS describes it as creating a unique echo effect with elements of vibrato and slapback delay, rather than copying a clean digital echo.

How much current does the JHS Oil Can Delay draw?

It runs on 9V DC center negative power and consumes 65mA. JHS warns not to use more than 9V DC, as doing so will void the warranty.

Is the Blackout Edition Oil Can Delay different from the white one?

No. The Blackout Edition, released in 2023 as a limited edition within Reverb's Blackout Series, uses the same circuit as the white 3 Series version that joined the regular line in 2025. The difference is the finish, not the sound.
