The JHS Pedals Mr. Magic was a one-knob boost pedal and, by JHS's own account, the very first boost the company ever released1. JHS describes its use simply: "It's a one knob boost. You can leave it on as an enhancer or you can hit your amp and create distortion"1. In other words, it could sit on a board permanently, lifting the guitar's signal into the front end, or be used as a gain pedal to push an amp into overdrive.

Discontinued, with a possible V2

The Mr. Magic is no longer made. JHS's product page states plainly that "until then no units are being produced"2. It was the first boost JHS ever released3.

JHS has also left the door open to a revival of the original circuit: "One day we may release a V2 that never saw the light of day"2. No such V2 has appeared.

From Mr. Magic to The Prestige

The pedal did get a second life, in a different form. In November 2012, Josh of JHS announced The Prestige for Black Friday as a redesigned revival of the discontinued Mr. Magic, demoing its buffer, boost and amp-driving overdrive functions in a smaller enclosure1. In that video he places it in the company's history, describing it as "the pedal we did a year so a little bit more than that we did called the mr. magic"3, meaning the Mr. Magic had been released a little more than a year before November 2012.

For players interested in what JHS offers now, the company's current buffer and boost designs are covered on the JHS Pedals Little Black Buffer, JHS The Prestige and JHS Pedals Buffered Splitter pages, and more broadly on the Buffer Pedals and Boost Pedals type pages.
