The Joyo Wah-1 is a wah/volume pedal: a compact rocking pedal that covers both wah and volume duties in one footprint. It was announced in March 2019 alongside a sibling model, the Joyo Wah-2, with the Wah-1 carrying an RRP of USD 691.
What it does
Both functions live under one rocker. "Both the new wah pedals have Wah and Volume functions," so the pedal can be rocked for wah sweeps or set as a volume control, depending on how it is used in a signal chain1. Players looking at this kind of two-in-one format will also find it in pedals like the Morley Mini Wah Volume and the Hotone Soul Press II.
In wah mode the Wah-1 is true bypass, so it does not color your tone when the wah is not engaged1. An LED shows when the pedal is engaged1.
Compact format
Joyo built the Wah-1 as a smaller, pedalboard-friendly pedal, which was a stated point of the design1. That compact size is what separates it from full-size wah and volume pedals, and it is the same pitch Joyo took with the Joyo Wah-I Classic Wah and the Joyo Wah-II Multimode announced at the same time1.
At the time of the March 2019 announcement, the Wah-1 had been announced but was not yet on the market1.
What reviewers said
Writing at the announcement, Jef of gearnews.com weighed the compact format against the price: "For the money, I think they are a no-brainer for those that need a compact wah pedal, as long as the build quality is up"1. Build quality was the one open question he flagged, since the pedals had not shipped when he wrote.
