The Dream Left Behind Fuzz is a one-knob fuzz pedal from Life Is Unfair, the pedal workshop run by designer Grindle. It is built on a Big Muff style circuit, but with a twist: Grindle told Guitar.com he designed it because he wanted "a Big Muff style circuit that would react to adjusting the volume control like a Fuzz Face circuit," meaning the guitar's own volume knob cleans the fuzz back rather than a control on the pedal.1

Pedal of the Day described its sounds as ranging from slightly overdriven to fuzzy overload, noting that "while you can invoke classic fuzz sounds of the past, there is an updated and more balanced tone available in this effect."2

Controls: one knob

There is a single knob on the pedal, and no tone control. Because the circuit has no tone stack and a fixed gain, the design leans on the volume knob of the instrument itself: as Pedal of the Day put it, "you use the Volume knob on your instrument to control the character" of the fuzz.2 The same reviewer, writing about the related Awkward Breed Fuzz, called the one-knob approach notable, "especially for it being just a one-knobber."3

ControlWhat it does
Single knobSets the fuzz level; tone shaping comes from the guitar's volume control2

With no tone stack on board, players who normally shape fuzz with a tone knob will do that shaping at the guitar or amplifier instead. That is the intended design, not an omission: the fixed-gain, tone-stack-free circuit is what lets the guitar's volume control respond the way it does.2

Where it came from

Grindle's stated aim was to combine two classic approaches: the Big Muff's style of fuzz and the Fuzz Face's sensitivity to guitar volume.1 Pedal of the Day noted that "Much Muff-y research was done to conjure up the sounds produced by the Dream Left Behind Fuzz."2 The pedal sits in a small Life Is Unfair range that has since grown to include collaborations such as the Bad Machine and the Violet Oscillation.2

What reviewers said

Pedal of the Day's reviewer was positive on the pedal, writing of the circuit's sounds that they were "quite impressed with" it overall.3 The same publication highlighted the enclosure as hand soldered and screen printed, finished in bright orange.2
