The Line 6 POD Express Bass is an ultra-portable amp and effects processor for bassists, built as a pedal not much larger than a standard stompbox12. It packs seven bass amp models, seven speaker cab models and 17 effects, including a looper, into a plastic enclosure weighing 0.8 lbs12. All of the amp and effects models are derived from Line 6's HX family of processors, the same modeling lineage behind the company's larger Line 6 Helix line1.

It launched in March 2024 alongside the POD Express Guitar, and Guitar World reported both units were available immediately at $1793. A later Guitar World review lists the POD Express Bass at $129 in the US, £149 in the UK and €185 in the EU4.

Seven amps and seven cabs from the HX family

The core of the pedal is its amp modeling. Line 6 says the POD Express devices use models derived from the HX family of processors "to ensure exceptional sound quality"1. Bass Gear Magazine's review notes the pedal "draws inspiration from the all-too-familiar HX, Helix, and POD family"2.

The seven amp models on the Bass version are Grit, Vintage, Punch, Modern, Round, Deep and Studio6, each paired with one of seven cab models12. The Vintage model is modeled after a Fender Bassman Silver Panel, according to Bass Gear Magazine's reviewer Lily Mitchell2.

Effects: compression, synth, distortion, modulation and delay

Alongside the amps and cabs, the pedal carries 17 effects, including a looper1. Bass Gear Magazine breaks the effects list down as four compressors, four synths, four distortions, three modulation effects and one delay2.

  • Compression: Optical, LA, Deluxe and Limiter6
  • Synth: Octave and Mutant are the named synth models2
  • Distortion: Boost, Overdrive, Distort and Fuzz6
  • Modulation and delay: Three modulation effects and one delay, with onboard tap tempo for delay users26

The synth section drew particular comment in the Bass Gear Magazine review: "Synth took me from bone-rattling lows ('Octave') to funky filter goodness ('Mutant')"2.

The controls

The top panel is built around a central amp-selecting knob lit by a ring of LEDs, flanked by four effects knobs3. Guitar World's news editor described the layout as "an admittedly rather busy top," with Alt buttons for reaching secondary functions3.

A seven-segment multi-color LED ring indicates parameter functions. A red LED shows the selected amp model when you turn the AMP encoder, and holding ALT while turning the AMP encoder shows the corresponding value. Turning an effects knob displays the selected effect level on LED segments 1 to 71.

The two onboard footswitches, ON and TAP, engage amps and effects, change presets, and sync time-based effects to a tempo1. Pressing and holding ON and TAP together enters Preset Mode, where you scroll up or down through the 21 preset locations with the footswitches1.

Power: three AA batteries or 9V DC

The pedal runs on three AA batteries, which are included, or on a 9-volt DC power supply sold separately, such as the Line 6 DC-1g adapter1. When running on batteries, the unit powers on when a cable is connected to the input jack and powers off when it is disconnected, so there is no separate power switch to forget1.

The 9V DC power supply is sold separately, so battery power is the out-of-the-box experience. The batteries are included in the box1.

Connections: stereo outputs, headphones and USB

The rear panel carries an instrument input, L/MONO and RIGHT main outputs, a 3.5mm stereo phones jack and USB-C17.

  • Main outputs: Connect the L/R outputs to stereo amps, powered speakers or recording devices to hear stereo effects as intended; mono devices use only the L/MONO output1
  • Headphones: The 3.5mm stereo phones jack allows private practice or recording1
  • USB: Connect to a computer or mobile device to use the pedal as a portable audio interface1
  • Expression and footswitches: An optional expression pedal can control volume, and up to two assignable external footswitches can select presets or turn effects on and off, or you can use a pedal and a single footswitch16

Guitar World's review of the POD Express family lists the connections as input, output (L/R), headphones, an external footswitch TRS socket and USB-C, and notes the onboard looper, tuner, tap-tempo switch and USB-C audio interface7.

What reviewers said

Bass Gear Magazine's Lily Mitchell reviewed the pedal in May 2024 at a listed price of $179.99 and came away positive: "I am impressed at how Line 6 captured the bass rig essentials and neatly presented them on the POD Express platter," calling it affordable, accessible, useful and fun for bassists of all skill levels2.

Guitar.com's reviewer Cillian Breathnach called the bass version "great news for beginner bassists, or those who want a giggable direct rig on a budget," while noting that "the clean tones could maybe do with a compressor"8.

Questions

Does the POD Express Bass run on batteries?

Yes. It runs on three AA batteries, which are included in the box, or on a 9-volt DC power supply sold separately, such as the Line 6 DC-1g adapter. When running on batteries, the unit powers on when you plug an instrument cable into the input jack and powers off when you unplug it.

Can the POD Express Bass be used as an audio interface?

Yes. Line 6 says you can connect the POD Express Bass to a computer or mobile device over USB and use it as a portable audio interface. The USB-C connection also carries audio, so you can record or practice through the pedal without extra hardware.

Can I add an expression pedal to the POD Express Bass?

Yes. An optional expression pedal can be connected to control volume, and up to two assignable external footswitches can be added to select presets or turn effects on and off. You can also use one expression pedal together with a single footswitch.

Which amp is the POD Express Bass Vintage model based on?

According to Bass Gear Magazine's review, the Vintage amp model is modeled after a Fender Bassman Silver Panel. The other amp models on the pedal are Grit, Punch, Modern, Round, Deep and Studio, all derived from Line 6's HX family of processors.

Does the POD Express Bass have a looper?

Yes. Line 6 counts a looper among the 17 effects included on the POD Express Bass, alongside the compression, synth, distortion, modulation and delay effects. The looper is part of the effects list on every POD Express product.

How many presets does the POD Express Bass hold?

It has 21 preset locations, and all of them can be overwritten with your own presets. You enter Preset Mode by pressing and holding the ON and TAP footswitches at the same time, then scroll through the 21 locations with the footswitches.
