The Rival Delay is a delay pedal from LPD Pedals, a builder based in Mesa, Arizona. It is a digital design voiced to sound like an analog echo, and it keeps its control layout to three knobs. The pedal was unveiled in March 2021, when Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio announced it in a news item1.
What it does
The Rival Delay sits in the delay pedals family: it repeats the notes you play, producing an echo effect. What sets it apart, as described at its unveiling, is the pairing of a digital engine with analog voicing. Digital delays process the signal with circuitry that can offer precision and features, while analog voiced designs aim for the darker, softening character players associate with analog echoes. The Rival Delay combines the two approaches in a three-knob pedal1.
"Mesa AZ's LPD Pedals just unveiled this great-sounding, three-knob digital but analog voiced echo called Rival Delay."
A three-knob layout keeps the pedal simple to operate, in the tradition of compact delay pedals where a small set of controls covers the essentials. For a player, that means the Rival Delay is positioned as a straightforward echo rather than a feature-heavy unit with presets, tap tempo divisions or secondary functions1.
The Rival Delay was newly announced as of 31 March 2021.
LPD Pedals also makes the LPD Pedals OFFSET Delay, a delay pedal that Delicious Audio later covered in more depth, including its controls, tap tempo divisions and delay time range1.
