The Massive Unity Dirty Boy is a preamp, boost and overdrive pedal in one box, unveiled by Massive Unity at Summer NAMM 20181. Designed by Danny Gomez, the brains behind the OMEC Teleport, it uses his proprietary T.A.E. (Tube Amp Emulation) technology: an analog circuit that mimics the tone of a real tube amp, in this case an amplifier built by Alex Saraceno for his son, session guitarist Blues Saraceno12.

What makes it unusual for a drive pedal is that it is really three tools at once. It works as a conventional boost/overdrive stompbox into the front of your amp, as a preamp with a speaker-emulated output for going straight to the board, and its foot-switchable Boost side adds 20 dB of tube-emulating extra gain2.

What it does to your sound

The Dirty Boy's whole design idea is tube amp emulation done in analog. Instead of digitally modeling an amp, Gomez's T.A.E. circuit recreates the sound of real tube drive with analog components1. Guitar.com described the result as a pedal that "mimics the tone of tube amps, in the model favored by Blues Saraceno, and a closed-back 4x12-inch 'Greenback' cab"2.

The pedal has two sides. The Dirty side carries the gain and the amp emulation; the Boost side is foot-switchable and delivers 20 dB of tube-emulating extra gain for solos or pushing the front end harder2.

The controls

The control set is deliberately simple. Gearnews reported simple controls labeled Gain, Volume, Tone and one for the foot-switchable Boost1.

ControlWhat it does
GainSets the amount of drive on the Dirty side3
ToneShapes the treble content3
VolumeSets the output level1
BoostFoot-switchable, adds 20 dB of tube-emulating extra gain2

The Variac knob

The knob that catches every eye is the big one in the center, labeled "Percentage Of Maximum Output Voltage"1. This is a Variac simulator, the same kind of voltage control found on the original Saraceno amp. It adjusts the pedal's internal voltage, effectively starving the emulated amp of power. Guitar World's reviewer, writing about the later Dirty Boy Preamp that carries the same control, found that rolled back too far it gives sputtery, gated sounds, while higher settings open the amp up4. Pedal of the Day called the Variac control "uber-intriguing" for the range of sounds it opens up5.

Three ways to use it

Guitar.com laid out the Dirty Boy's three operating scenarios, which is where a preamp-style pedal earns its keep2:

  1. Into your amp's input: use it as a conventional boost/overdrive stompbox straight to your amp's input2.
  2. As a preamp into a power stage: the regular output feeds a power amp and speaker, with the pedal supplying the preamp tone.
  3. Direct to the board: the speaker-emulated output lets you send your signal directly to the board, with no amp at all2.

The emulated output is based around a closed-back 4x12 loaded with Greenback speakers16, so going direct still carries the sound of a real cab. This puts it in the same family as dedicated speaker simulation and preamp pedals, but with the drive and boost built in.

Danny Gomez and the T.A.E. technology

Danny Gomez is the designer behind the Dirty Boy, and T.A.E. is his proprietary tube amp emulation approach1. Massive Unity was the vehicle for the original Dirty Boy, and Gomez later became the owner of the Dirty Boy brand itself. Guitar World's Trevor Curwen, reviewing the later Dirty Boy Preamp, noted: "The brand has been acquired by musician and product designer Danny Gomez, who is known for his proprietary TAE" technology4. Pedal of the Day credits the Dirty Boy products to Gomez and co-developer Pablo Díaz de Rada, available to both guitarists and bassists5.

The amp being emulated has its own story. It was designed and built by Alex Saraceno, father of guitarist Blues Saraceno, for his son to play641. MusicRadar, covering the later Preamp, described it as "a Gomez design, but was based on an amp designed by Saraceno Sr. for Saraceno Jr."7. Gearnews called Blues Saraceno a "legendary 'plaid-loving' session guitarist" whose amp sits at the heart of the pedal1.

Where the Dirty Boy line went next

The Massive Unity Dirty Boy was followed by the Dirty Boy T.A.E. Preamp Boost/Overdrive, which Pedal of the Day reviewed in December 2018 as "a revolutionary Boost/Overdrive pedal from Massive Unity Ltd."5. The later Dirty Boy Preamp, the first product under Gomez's ownership, is based on the same Alex Saraceno amplifier design, with true bypass, a Variac simulator and a speaker-emulated output based on a closed-back 4x12 with Greenbacks4.

In 2026, Dirty Boy partnered with Warm Audio to recreate its circuits in a more affordable, pedalboard-friendly Jr. series: the Dirty Boy Jr Overdrive based on the Preamp, a Booster based on the Ball Buster, and a fuzz based on the Afro Fuzz89. GuitarPlayer's review of the Jr. Overdrive notes it features "a unique Variac knob, as well as a second output featuring designer (and current Dirty Boy owner) Danny Gomez's Tube Amp Emulation (T.A.E.) circuit"10, and Delicious Audio describes that Variac knob as one that "adjusts the internal voltage, letting you dial everything from a barely-breaking-up boost to ragged, vintage-style breakup"11. So the original Massive Unity pedal's core ideas, the T.A.E. circuit, the Variac and the emulated output, all carry forward into the current range.

Questions

Does the Massive Unity Dirty Boy have a cab simulator?

Yes. Alongside its regular preamp output it has a speaker-emulated output that mimics a closed-back 4x12 cabinet loaded with Celestion Greenback speakers, so it can go straight into a mixing desk, PA or recording setup without a real cab.

What amp does the Dirty Boy emulate?

It emulates an amplifier designed by Alex Saraceno, father of session guitarist Blues Saraceno, and used by Blues himself. Danny Gomez's T.A.E. (Tube Amp Emulation) technology recreates that amp's tube drive in an analog pedal circuit.

Is the Massive Unity Dirty Boy analog?

Yes. The Dirty Boy is all-analog, using Gomez's proprietary T.A.E. circuitry to mimic the tone of a real tube amp rather than digital modelling. Pedal of the Day described it as lightweight, all-analog and gig-ready out of the box.

What does the Percentage Of Maximum Output Voltage knob do?

It is the Dirty Boy's Variac control. It adjusts the pedal's internal voltage, effectively starving the emulated amp of power. Rolled back it can give sputtery, gated sounds; turned up it opens up the breakup, from a barely-breaking-up boost to full drive.

Can the Dirty Boy run on a battery?

No. The pedal needs a 9V external AC-DC adaptor to power it, so there is no battery option. Plan for a spot on your power supply.
