The Master Effects Puppet Master EQ, or PMEQ, is a 3-band semi-parametric EQ pedal built around the settings used on the Aphex EQF-2 parametric EQ, the rack unit behind the guitar sounds on Metallica's Master of Puppets1. Each band has its own level control and a FREQ control for selecting the band's center frequency, so you can dial in a low boost, a mid cut, and a high shelf boost at the frequencies you choose rather than fixed ones1.
The controls and frequency ranges
The PMEQ gives each of its three bands a level control and a FREQ control, so the pedal covers1:
| Band | What the level control does | Frequency range | Maximum action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | Low frequency boost level | 25 to 500 Hz | up to 12dB boost |
| Mid | Mid frequency cut level | 250 to 5000 Hz | up to 12dB cut |
| High | High shelf boost level | 1 to 20 kHz | up to 12dB boost |
Each band's FREQ control selects where in that range the band acts, which is what makes the pedal semi-parametric rather than a fixed-band EQ1.
Headroom and power
Inside the pedal, a charge pump supplies the circuit with ±15V power, which the maker describes as 30V of headroom to keep the EQ from clipping or distorting1. The pedal runs from a standard boss-style 9V power supply with a 2.1mm, center negative connector, and needs a supply with a minimum 100mA current output1.
The pedal has no battery option mentioned and needs a supply capable of at least 100mA, so check your daisy-chain or brick output before plugging in.
Version 2
In August 2024, Master Effects announced a "version 2" of the PMEQ with three changes1:
- Frequency markers added to the FREQ controls, making it easier to see and recall where each band is set
- The buffer from the original EQF-2 added into the signal chain ahead of the EQ stages
- A corrected design issue from the original that could cause the high shelf band to oscillate and make strange noises with some amps, fixed without affecting the tone of the EQ stage
On bypass, version 2 remains true bypass, with the buffer only in the signal chain when the pedal is engaged1.
Where it is made and the warranty
Each pedal uses a professionally manufactured PCB and is assembled by hand in Calgary, Alberta, Canada1. Master Effects backs each pedal with a 1 year warranty on parts and labor, which does not cover damage from an improper power supply or misuse1.

Questions
What EQ settings is the Puppet Master EQ based on?
Master Effects says the Puppet Master EQ is based on the settings used on the Aphex EQF-2 parametric EQ, the rack unit associated with the guitar tones on Metallica's Master of Puppets. Version 2 of the pedal also carries the buffer from the original EQF-2 in the signal chain ahead of the EQ stages.
Is the Puppet Master EQ true bypass?
Yes. Version 2 of the Puppet Master EQ is true bypass, with the buffer only in the signal chain when the pedal is engaged. When the pedal is off, your guitar's signal passes through untouched.
Where is the Master Effects Puppet Master EQ made?
Each Puppet Master EQ uses a professionally manufactured PCB and is assembled by hand in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
What warranty does the Puppet Master EQ have?
Each pedal comes with a 1 year warranty on parts and labour. The warranty does not cover damage caused by an improper power supply or misuse.
