The MOD Duo X is a standalone audio processor from German maker MOD Devices, announced in 2018 as a more powerful version of the company's MOD Duo1. Where a typical multi-effects pedal sits on the floor and processes guitar, the Duo X is a desktop unit that hosts multi FX, virtual instruments, MIDI tools and CV utilities in one box2. MOD Devices pitched it at players and producers working in the studio, electronic music production and performance, and DJing3.

Under the hood it is a digital device: a purpose-built, Linux-based hardware plugin host with its own ecosystem that runs audio and MIDI manipulation modules4, built around a standalone NXP i.MX8M quad-core ARM Cortex-A53, 1.5GHz audio processor1. The firmware is Linux-based and its status is outlined on two graphical displays5. It is a stereo unit6, with independent audio I/O that can run stereo or dual mono, a preamp per channel and a master volume control2.

A standalone audio processor on the desktop

The Duo X's defining feature is that it does not need a computer to make sound. Gearnews described it as a desktop-format unit with fully standalone functionality, targeting electronic musicians5, and Delicious Audio called it a standalone audio processor containing an array of effects, virtual instruments and MIDI utilities3. Like the original MOD Duo, it has completely independent audio I/O7, so it runs its pedalboards on its own processor with its own audio connections.

For a player, that means the Duo X behaves more like a small studio hub than a stompbox. Bass Gear Magazine's reviewer, Sean Fairchild, noted that it is "markedly more refined and more suited to the desktop than underfoot, with its soft, MPC-style button actuators"4. Performer Mag's Chris Devine confirmed it is a stereo unit6.

Editing is where the computer comes in. As Performer Mag put it, you "connect it to a computer via USB, and start up a browser", and it is ready to go6. The unit itself keeps running standalone once your pedalboard is loaded.

The controls: encoders, pots, pads and buttons

The Duo X's control surface is what separates it from the floor-mounted MOD Duo. Per the maker, it carries462:

  • 2 rotary encoders
  • 8 potentiometers
  • 4 push-buttons
  • All fully assignable2

Gearnews listed the same set as two encoders, eight potentiometers and four pads, all freely assignable5, and Delicious Audio added six push buttons with instant setting recall and alternation capabilities, plus a pagination system for reaching more parameters than the surface shows at once3.

Like the previous MOD Duo, there are two large display screens, which show which control is assigned to which parameter and respond in real time6. The original Duo took a simpler approach: two multi-function knobs to which any parameters can be assigned, stacking several controls per knob with a push7. The Duo X's extra real-time control was the point of the upgrade, as Performer Mag noted: "Now comes the Mod Duo X, adding in some extra real time control"6.

MIDI, USB and outputs

The Duo X is well connected for a desktop unit. The maker lists classic MIDI I/O and a USB-device port for computer connection2, and Gearnews confirmed MIDI I/O is also possible over USB5. Delicious Audio reported it supports numerous MIDI controllers operating at the same time, with MIDI Slave Sync and Stereo Link3. The original MOD Duo likewise offered full MIDI support, both legacy DIN and USB7.

Audio-wise, the Duo X offers independent audio I/O, stereo or dual mono, with a preamp per channel and a master volume control2, plus a headphone out with a dedicated volume control2. The MOD Duo also carried a headphone output with independent digital volume control8.

What reviewers made of it

Coverage of the MOD Duo X while it was new focused on its availability and its interface rather than verdicts. The unit was available for pre-order at the time5, and its control surface includes a pagination system for organizing and reaching its functions53.

Questions

Does the MOD Duo X work without a computer?

Yes. The MOD Duo X is a fully standalone audio processor with its own ARM processor, audio I/O and controls, aimed at studio work, electronic music and DJing. A computer is only needed for editing: you connect it via USB and open a browser to build and assign pedalboards.

Is the MOD Duo X analog or digital?

It is digital. The Duo X is a Linux-based hardware plugin host that runs effects, virtual instruments and MIDI tools as software, with digitally controlled multi-stage analog preamps on its inputs to feed the digital engine.

How much does the MOD Duo X cost?

The MOD Duo X was priced at $699. Bass Gear Magazine listed it at $699 with free shipping in the US in May 2020, and Performer Mag gave the same $699 street price in January 2020. The 2018 limited edition was announced at 699 Euro.

Does the MOD Duo X have MIDI?

Yes. It has classic MIDI I/O on DIN ports, MIDI over USB, MIDI Slave Sync and Stereo Link, and it can host numerous MIDI controllers operating at the same time.

What is the difference between the MOD Duo and the MOD Duo X?

The Duo X is a more powerful version of the MOD Duo audio processor in a desktop format, adding extra real-time control: two rotary encoders, eight potentiometers and four push-buttons, all freely assignable, plus soft MPC-style button actuators suited to the desktop rather than the floor.
