The Mr. Black DoubleChorus Diamond Sunset is a chorus pedal built around four modulated delay lines. Mr. Black describes the effect as a full-range chorus in which "Four discrete modulated delay lines interweave and braid together creating a multi-dimensional chorus unlike anything el[se]," and sums up the sound as "Smooth, natural and deep. This is the DoubleChorus."1

Where a conventional chorus uses one or two delayed voices, four separate lines give the effect a thicker, more layered character, and the full-range design means the modulation applies across the whole signal rather than only part of it1.

Power and bypass

The pedal runs from a 9VDC 2.1mm negative center-pin supply, the standard arrangement for most pedalboard power supplies, or from an internal 9V battery. Mr. Black specifies a current draw of under 60mA and recommends a supply rated at 100mA or more, so a standard isolated outlet on a pedalboard supply will handle it.1

The internal 9V battery is not included, so you will need to supply your own if you want to run the pedal without an adapter.1

Bypass is True-Bypass, meaning the chorus circuit is removed from the signal path entirely when the pedal is off.1

  • High-gloss white

The enclosure measures 2.4" x 4.5" x 1.8", a compact footprint by standard pedalbox standards.1

Price

The DoubleChorus Diamond Sunset carries a regular price of $219.95, with a sale price of $199.95 listed on the product page.1

Where it sits in Mr. Black's chorus range

Mr. Black builds several chorus pedals, and the DoubleChorus sits among them as the four-delay-line design. The company's other chorus pedals include the Mini Vintage Chorus, a compact BBD-style chorus, and the Analog Chorus/Vibrato Deluxe, an expanded BBD chorus and vibrato pedal with tap tempo. The Vintage Ensemble Stereo Professional takes a different approach again, using twin digital delay lines to recreate the Boss CE-1 style chorus and vibrato in stereo. For a broader look at the effect type, see the Chorus Pedals page1.

Questions

Is the Mr. Black DoubleChorus true bypass?

Yes. Mr. Black lists the DoubleChorus Diamond Sunset as True-Bypass, so when the pedal is off, your guitar's signal passes through it without the chorus circuit in the path. That matters on a pedalboard where several pedals sit between your guitar and amp, since buffers and non-true-bypass stages can each color the tone slightly.

Does the Mr. Black DoubleChorus take a battery?

Yes. The DoubleChorus Diamond Sunset can run on an internal 9V battery, though Mr. Black notes the battery is not included, so you will need to supply your own. The pedal can also be powered from a 9VDC 2.1mm negative center-pin adapter, which is the usual arrangement on a pedalboard with a shared power supply.

How much current does the Mr. Black DoubleChorus draw?

Mr. Black specifies a current draw of under 60mA, and recommends a power supply output of at least 100mA. Most standard pedal power supplies comfortably meet that recommendation, but it is worth checking the rating of the outlet you plan to use, especially on older or lower-current daisy-chain supplies.

What finishes does the Diamond Sunset edition come in?

The Diamond Sunset Special Edition comes in your choice of two powder-coat finishes: black satin or high-gloss white. Both are listed by Mr. Black on the DoubleChorus Diamond Sunset product page, so the choice is purely cosmetic and does not affect the circuit or features.

Where can I find the Mr. Black DoubleChorus manual?

Mr. Black hosts the DoubleChorus manual as a PDF on its manuals site, at mrblack.jackdeville.com/manuals/doublechorus-manual.pdf. The link is given on the DoubleChorus Diamond Sunset product page, and the manual covers the pedal's controls and power requirements in detail.
