The MXR ZW44 Berzerker Overdrive is Zakk Wylde's signature overdrive pedal, part of MXR's long line of artist drives alongside pedals like the MXR Wylde Audio Zakk Sabbath Overdrive and the MXR Yngwie Malmsteen Overdrive. It was first developed in 2011 and has been through several reissues since1.

What it does

The Berzerker carries the usual overdrive pedal controls of output, tone and gain, so it is set up like any standard drive on a board1. MXR's own description of the pedal, quoted in Guitar Player, is that it is "loud, tough, and relentless"1.

Wylde explains its role in his rig in terms of sustain rather than a wholesale change of tone1:

"But you know what the Berzerker overdrive does? It just gives you more of what you have."
Zakk Wylde, speaking to Guitar Player1

Without it, he says, the sound cuts out too early; with it, he gets more sustain on top of what the amp is already doing1. That places it in the camp of drives that push an existing tone rather than replace it, the same broad territory as the MXR GT-OD or the MXR Sugar Drive. For more on the category, see Overdrive Pedals.

Circuit background

An independent technical analysis by DIY Fever examines the related MXR ZW and GT pedals and finds the ZW-44 is a variant of the MXR Classic OD circuit, with an internal switch set to the ZW position when the pedal is labeled2. The same analysis notes a modification option for the circuit: soldering three pins and using them with a jumper, in the way jumpers are used on hard drives or motherboards2.

The circuit relationship comes from an independent teardown, not from MXR, and applies to the ZW-44 as analyzed there rather than to every reissue of the pedal.
