The NUX Steel Singer Drive is an analog overdrive pedal from NUX, part of the company's Reissue Series. It is built to recreate the tone of the Dumble Steel String Singer, which Delicious Audio describes as the less popular of the two Dumble amps, the other being the Overdrive Special that most Dumble-style pedals chase1. NUX's own description says the pedal has "very smooth high end and sweet mid-range"2.

What makes it notable is the price. Delicious Audio called it the most affordable Dumble-style pedal out there when the pedal carried a street price of just under $501. It first appeared in 20203, and Tone Island reports it is available once more as part of the reissue series4.

Controls and how it shapes your sound

The control set is minimal: Volume, Gain, and Filter, with the Filter acting as a treble control4. That three-knob layout mirrors the simplicity of the amp it is based on, and it means the pedal is set up for players who want to dial in a sound quickly rather than sculpt it in detail.

NUX describes the pedal as having "the tonal character of the famous boutique amp from California. lt has very smooth high end and sweet mid-range"2. In practice, the Filter knob is the main tone-shaping tool, rolling off or opening up the top end to match the amp and guitar it sits in front of.

ControlWhat it does
VolumeSets the overall output level
GainSets the amount of overdrive
FilterA treble control, shaping the top end4

Power and switching

The pedal runs on 9 Volt DC or a 9V battery, drawing under 20 mA2. That low draw makes it easy to place on a shared supply, and the battery option suits a minimal setup. Switching is true-bypass hardware switching, so the signal passes through unbuffered when the pedal is off2. Input impedance is 1M Ohms and output impedance is 10K Ohms2.

The battery option is worth noting: many compact overdrives in this price range are adapter-only, so a player building a first board without a power supply can run this one on its own.

History: the Steel String Singer amp and the Reissue Series

The pedal's name comes from the Dumble Steel String Singer, a model of Dumble amplifier6. Alexander Dumble's amps are hand-built and rare, and the Steel String Singer in particular is described by Vertex Effects as "a rare 100-watt 6L6 blues machine that achieved legendary status in the mid-1980s"7. Gearnews similarly calls the original SSS amps "100-watt 6L6 driven tone monsters"8.

The amp's fame rests partly on its association with Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the units themselves vary. In a Sweetwater demo, Vertex's Mason Marangella noted that the first Steel String Singer ever made, serial number 001, was used to voice the original Vertex Steel String pedal, and that "Stevie's did have a little bit more mid-range content" than that first unit910. MusicRadar reported that Marangella found and demonstrated serial number 001 in a December 2023 video10. Vertex also had access to Steel String Singer number one when designing its own Steel String Supreme pedal11.

NUX's version arrived in 20203 with a street price of just under $505. It later went out of the lineup and has returned as part of the Reissue Series, the range NUX uses to bring back earlier designs24.

How it compares in the NUX range

The Steel Singer Drive sits among NUX's other amp-style drives. The company's Reissue Series and related lines include the NUX Horseman, the NUX Ace of Tone and NUX NDO-5 Ace of Tone Dual Overdrive, the NUX Queen Of Tone and NUX NDO6 Queen of Tone Dual Overdrive, and the NUX Drive Core. Where those pedals draw on other circuits, the Steel Singer Drive is the one in the range aimed squarely at the Steel String Singer side of the Dumble sound, the smoother, less mid-forward character that Delicious Audio notes is the less popular of the two Dumble amps1.

What reviewers said

Published coverage of the pedal has focused on its value. Delicious Audio's 2024 verdict named it the most affordable Dumble-style pedal available, at a time when it carried a street price of just under $5015. That affordability is the recurring theme: a pedal voiced after one of the rarest and most expensive amplifiers in existence, at a street price under $5015. Tone Island's coverage adds the practical detail that the pedal is available again through the reissue series, and describes its control scheme as "Volume, gain, and filter. Filter being a treble control"4.

Questions

Does the NUX Steel Singer Drive take a 9V battery?

Yes. NUX lists the pedal's power requirements as 9 Volt DC or a 9V battery, so it runs either way. Current draw is under 20 mA, which is low enough that a battery is a practical option for players who do not want to deal with a power supply on a small board.

Is the NUX Steel Singer Drive true bypass?

Yes. NUX specifies true-bypass hardware switching, so when the pedal is off the signal passes through without buffering. That suits players who keep it at the front of a chain and want their clean tone untouched when the effect is disengaged.

How much current does the NUX Steel Singer Drive draw?

NUX lists the current draw as under 20 mA. That is a light load by pedal standards, so it can share a daisy chain or a modest isolated supply with several other pedals without putting real pressure on the power budget.

Is the NUX Steel Singer Drive analog?

Yes. NUX describes it as a pure analog circuit, and Delicious Audio's coverage calls it an analog overdrive. There is no digital processing in the signal path, which matters to players comparing it against digital amp-in-a-box style units.
