The Wrangler Compressor is a compressor pedal from Outlaw Effects, a Montreal-based maker of small effect pedals. It was introduced at the 2018 NAMM Show as one of a foursome of new guitar pedals from the company.12
What it does
Like any compressor pedal, the Wrangler evens out the difference between your quietest and loudest notes. Outlaw Effects puts it plainly: "This compression cowboy herds in extremes to smooth out your tone while maintaining its character."1
The pedal keeps its control layout simple, with two things on the player's side13:
- Sensitivity: sets how hard the pedal compresses. Outlaw Effects says that "with the Sensitivity control, you can dial in subtle, transparent compression, or opt for a more pronounced effect with prolonged sustain."1
- Normal/Hi Cut toggle switch: "lets you reduce unwanted brightness with a flick of a switch," according to Guitar World.3
That two-control arrangement makes the Wrangler a set-and-forget style compressor: one knob for the amount of squeeze, one switch for tone shaping, rather than the deeper control sets some compressors offer13.
Where it came from
Outlaw Effects showed the Wrangler Compressor at Winter NAMM 2018 as part of a group of new releases. Delicious Audio reported that "Outlaw debuted three new effects at Winter NAMM 2018: the Eldorado Echo, Wrangler Compressor and Cactus Juice 2-Mode Overdrive,"2 and Premier Guitar's coverage of the same show described the company as introducing a foursome of new guitar pedals.1 The Wrangler sits in the company's lineup beside its overdrive and delay siblings from that launch.
