The PigDog Germanium Overdrive is a hand-built overdrive pedal from PigDog Pedals, designed and built by Steve Williams. It is built around a late-1950s or early-1960s vintage RCA 2N270 germanium transistor and two germanium diodes, and it was made in a strictly limited run: 50 units in total, in two batches of 25. All of them have sold, and according to the builder there will not be any more1.

Guitar Pedal X's reviewer, Stefan Karlsson, described it as "a very classic sounding Germanium Harmonic Overdrive with superb dynamics - mid-gain in its gain profile", and noted that it sits somewhere between an overdrive and a boost: it is "obviously more of an Overdrive - and has a little more gain, but it can be used as a G"ermanium boost at lower gain settings21.

How it sounds and how it differs from a straight boost

The pedal's character comes from its vintage parts. The RCA 2N270 germanium transistor is rare, and the reviewer noted that "considering the rarity of the 2N270 Transistors - there aren't likel"y to be more built1. Germanium transistors and diodes are the same family of parts used in classic 1960s fuzz and boost circuits, and here they shape a mid-gain overdrive rather than a full-on fuzz.

In use, the reviewer found the pedal cleans up strongly with the guitar's volume knob, returning to a clean tone when you roll back. At the other extreme, running Level and Drive high together adds some white noise, which the Filter control tames by shaving off highs1.

Controls: Level, Drive and Filter

The pedal keeps its control set to three knobs:

ControlWhat it does
LevelSets output volume; high settings combined with high Drive add white noise1
DriveSets gain; the pedal works as a germanium boost at lower gain settings2
FilterRolls off high frequencies, shaving the top end1

All three controls contribute to what the reviewer called "strong guitar volume cleanup to clean", meaning the pedal responds to your guitar's volume knob the way vintage germanium circuits do1.

Build and circuit

Inside, the pedal is a clean perf-board build. The reviewer's inspection found 6 metal film resistors, 4 electrolytic capacitors, a mix of WIMA, mylar and yellow drop capacitors, and a presumed J201 input-stage JFET, alongside the RCA 2N270 transistor and the two germanium clipping diodes1.

The enclosure is a warm dark gray sparkle finish with fairly minimal but elegant lettering, and the pedal uses a soft-click 3PDT footswitch, which the reviewer described as the gold standard for this kind of build1.

The pedal has a battery clip onboard, so it can run on an internal battery if that is how you wish to power it. No other power specifications were published for it.

A limited run of 50

Only 50 of these pedals exist. The first batch of 25 went live in May 2026, and the second batch of 25 went live on the Friday before the Guitar Pedal X review, in August 2026, selling out at launch1. The reviewer snagged one at the start of the order cycle, and the pedal has since joined the Guitar Pedal X Reference Collection as a permanent member1.

The price was £299 GBP, with £12 delivery via DHL1.

What the reviewer said

Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson reviewed the pedal in August 2026 and was positive about both its build and its sound1:

"PigDog's Germanium Overdrive delivers a beautifully rich and harmonic mid-gain overdrive profile"
Stefan Karlsson, Guitar Pedal X1

On build quality, he wrote:

"As expected for a Steve Williams production - this is another superb high-quality build"

Questions

Who designed the PigDog Germanium Overdrive?

The PigDog Germanium Overdrive is a Steve Williams production, built by PigDog Pedals. A Guitar Pedal X review of the pedal called it another superb high-quality build, as expected from a Steve Williams pedal.

What transistor does the PigDog Germanium Overdrive use?

It uses a late-1950s or early-1960s vintage RCA 2N270 germanium transistor, along with two unspecified germanium diodes for clipping. The rarity of the 2N270 transistors is one reason no further units are likely to be built.

Does the PigDog Germanium Overdrive run on a battery?

Yes. The pedal has a battery clip onboard, so it can be powered by an internal battery if that is how you wish to power it. No other power specifications were published.

Is the PigDog Germanium Overdrive still available?

No. All 50 units have been sold and, according to the builder, there will not be any more. The second batch of 25 sold out when it went live in August 2026.

How many PigDog Germanium Overdrive pedals were made?

A total of 50 were made, in two batches of 25. The first batch was released in May 2026 and the second batch went live on the Friday before the Guitar Pedal X review in August 2026.
