Rainger FX is a London-based pedal builder run by David Rainger, and the Dr Freakenstein Fuzz DrFF-3 is the company's fuzz pedal in the Dr Freakenstein line. It is a fuzz effect, sitting alongside other designs in the fuzz family, and it is built around controls you do not find on most pedals: a knife switch and an Igor pressure pad, with a gated modulation element to the fuzz voice1.
What it does
The DrFF-3 produces a fuzz sound with a gated modulation character, and its operation is unusual enough that Delicious Audio's reviewer judged it the weirdest pedal he had encountered1. The knife switch serves as the pedal's on-off control rather than a conventional footswitch, and the Igor pressure pad gives a momentary, press-to-activate control alongside it1. For a player, that means the pedal is worked partly by hand as well as by foot, which shapes how it sits on a board and how it is used in a song.
Where it sits in the Rainger FX range
The Dr Freakenstein name has also appeared elsewhere in the Rainger FX range, in the Bleep Fuzz and the Dr Freakenstein Chop Fuzzz2.
The DrFF-3's knife switch and Igor pressure pad set it apart from the smaller and later Rainger fuzz designs, which trade those controls for a compact enclosure and panel knobs12.
