Rainger FX Amp Crash

FuzzHybrid

The Rainger FX Amp Crash is an all-in-one effects pedal, guitar amp and speaker, mic'd up1. It is a collaboration between Rainger FX of London and Death By Audio of New York1, priced at £425 including VAT in the UK1. Inside the box is a small speaker driven by an internal amp, and a mic positioned looking directly at the edge of that speaker1. The mic picks up the sound of the speaker and routes it into your signal, so what you hear is a blend of your direct signal and a real, physically moving speaker being pushed hard.

Rainger FX describes the result as a full-range fuzz pedal with a dense, wide-frequency sound and a small amount of "sag" at the extreme1. On That Pedal Show, Dan and Mick summed up what is in it: "it's got distortion, overdrive, and it's also got reverb, echo, and chorus in it."2

An analog fuzz, speaker and mic in one box

Most fuzz pedals shape a signal entirely with electronics. The Amp Crash puts a real speaker in the path. Your guitar drives an internal amp and speaker, and the internal mic picks up the sound of that speaker and routes it into your signal and on into any external amp3. The mic also picks up the external amp's signal, so the two sides of the circuit interact3.

All that mic'd material can be fed into the DI Out, to mix with the directly connected signal path1. There is also a separate Mic Out1. This is what separates the Amp Crash from a conventional fuzz or distortion pedal: the dirt comes partly from a speaker being driven in a box on your pedalboard, not just from clipping diodes.

GuitarPlayer's reviewer, Dave Hunter, judged it by what it does rather than what it imitates3:

"Rather than chasing authentic vintage tube tone, it excels at creating abrasive overdrive, fuzz, feedback and atmospheric textures"3

The controls and effect modes

The Amp Crash has controls for gain and tone, as well as for DI out (the DI-tapped amp signal) and mic out, with an on/off control for each3. The Gain knob goes from almost clean right up to an intense analog fuzz, tonally shaped by the Tone control; it also acts as a volume control for the internal speaker1.

On top of the analog fuzz there is a choice of digital effects1:

EffectRange
ReverbUp to 12 seconds maximum1
EchoFrom single repeat up to over-oscillating howling delays1
ChorusFrom subtle up to flanging extremes1

The chorus reaching flanging extremes means the modulation side of the pedal can cover ground that would normally need a separate chorus or flanger, and the echo's over-oscillation puts it in delay territory for self-oscillating noise1.

Outputs and power

The pedal's jack layout is straightforward: a single input, a single output, and an external speaker jack3. Death By Audio lists the ports as a 1/4" TS input, a 1/4" TS output, and a 1/4" TS external speaker out4.

The external speaker jack lets you connect a larger extension cab with a rating of at least eight ohms3. Because the internal mic also picks up the external amp's signal3, running it into a bigger rig feeds that bigger sound back into the pedal's mic'd blend.

The Amp Crash draws 300mA15, far more than a typical analog fuzz. GuitarPlayer notes it is powered by an external 9V DC adapter rated to supply at least 300mA3, so check that your power supply output can deliver that before plugging in.

Size and weight

The pedal measures 93mm wide, 142mm deep and 72mm in total height1. It weighs 540g1, which Death By Audio lists as 23.1 oz5 and GuitarPlayer describes as around one and a half pounds3. The extra height compared with a standard mini pedal is the price of having a speaker and mic inside.

Questions

What is the Rainger FX Amp Crash?

It is an all-in-one effects pedal, guitar amp and speaker in one box, made by Rainger FX in London in collaboration with Death By Audio in New York. It drives an internal speaker, mics it, and mixes that mic'd sound with your direct signal. It gives analog fuzz plus a choice of digital reverb, echo or chorus.

Who made the Rainger FX Amp Crash with Rainger FX?

The Amp Crash is a collaboration between Rainger FX of London and Death By Audio of New York. Rainger FX describes it as a joint project between the two builders, and Death By Audio lists it with its own product specifications on its site.

What does the DI out on the Amp Crash carry?

The DI Out carries the mic'd speaker sound, so the sound of the internal speaker picked up by the internal mic can be fed out and mixed with the directly connected signal path. There is also a separate Mic Out, and an external speaker socket for driving a larger cab.

How much power does the Amp Crash need?

It runs on a 9V DC center-negative adapter rated to supply at least 300mA. That draw is high for a fuzz pedal, so a typical low-current daisy chain output may not be enough; use a power supply output that can deliver 300mA or more.

How big and heavy is the Amp Crash?

It measures 93mm wide, 142mm deep and 72mm in total height, and weighs 540g, which Death By Audio lists as 23.1 oz, around one and a half pounds. It is a compact mini-pedal footprint but taller than most, since it contains a speaker and mic.

Can I connect an external speaker to the Amp Crash?

Yes. Besides the input and output jacks there is an external speaker jack that lets you connect a larger extension cab rated at a minimum of eight ohms. The internal mic also picks up the sound of any external amp you feed it into.
