The Rocktron Tri-Wah is an analog wah pedal with three voicing modes, Normal, Classic and Bass, selected by a three-position switch. Rocktron markets it as a multi-function wah at a budget price, and the Bass voicing makes it usable with bass guitar and with drop-tuned and 7-string guitars as well as a standard six-string1.
The three voicings
The three-position switch is the pedal's main feature. Rocktron describes the settings this way1:
- Normal offers the frequency sweep that is the industry standard, meaning the familiar wah response players expect from a conventional wah pedal.
- Classic is, in Rocktron's words, "a sweet vintage wah that is musical and expressive."
- Bass is designed for bass guitar and also provides the frequency sweep to make drop-tuned and 7-string guitars scream.
The Bass mode is what separates the Tri-Wah from a single-voice wah: one pedal covers standard guitar, vintage-style wah, and low-tuned instruments. Rocktron also makes single-voice wah pedals such as the Rocktron Classic Wah, and a signature model with a Mix control, the Rocktron Mike Orlando Signature Wah, plus the fixed-voicing Rocktron Sweet Spot and Rocktron Black Cat Moan1.
Placement and power
Like all wah pedals, Rocktron says the Tri-Wah should normally go at the beginning of your signal chain, before overdrive, distortion and delay pedals1.
Power comes from a 9VDC supply. Rocktron lists the power requirement as 9VDC / 300mA, which is the rating the supply should carry, while the pedal's current consumption is listed at 35mA1.
Rocktron lists a 300mA supply requirement against a 35mA current draw. Use a 9V DC supply rated to at least 300mA for this pedal, and do not share it on a daisy chain with pedals whose combined draw could exceed the supply's rating.
Feel and specifications
The rocker tension is adjustable, so you can set the pedal action for a lighter or heavier touch, which Rocktron describes as adjusting the pedal's "touch"1. The wah sweep runs from 400Hz with the rocker at heel down to 2KHz at toe down, and the pedal accepts a maximum input of +10dBu with a 1M ohm input impedance and a 1K ohm output impedance1.

Questions
Is the Rocktron Tri-Wah analog or digital?
The Tri-Wah is an analog pedal. RockBoard's PedalPedia lists its circuit type as analog, and Rocktron's own product page describes it as a conventional wah pedal that sits at the front of the signal chain, as wah pedals normally do.
What power supply does the Rocktron Tri-Wah need?
Rocktron specifies a 9VDC power supply rated at 300mA for the Tri-Wah. The pedal's current consumption is listed at 35mA, so a standard 9V DC supply with enough headroom covers it. Rocktron does not list battery operation among the specifications on the product page.
Can the Rocktron Tri-Wah be used with bass guitar?
Yes. The Bass voicing mode is designed for bass guitar, and Rocktron also points to it for drop-tuned and 7-string guitars, where a standard wah sweep can sound thin or harsh. Switching to Bass moves the pedal's frequency range to suit lower-tuned instruments.
What does the Bass mode on the Tri-Wah do?
The Bass setting shifts the wah's voicing down for bass guitar. Rocktron says it is not only designed for bass guitar but also provides the frequency sweep to make drop-tuned and 7-string guitars scream, so it works as a low-tuned guitar wah as well.
Can you adjust the rocker tension on the Tri-Wah?
Yes. The Tri-Wah has adjustable pedal rocker tension, which lets you set the pedal action for a lighter or heavier touch. If the rocker feels too loose or too stiff for your playing style, you can adjust it to taste.
