The Science Amplification Mother Preamp is a dual-channel preamp pedal from Science Amplification, a Washington-state amp builder, and it was the company's first pedal release, reported by Delicious Audio on 2 May 20241. It is a recreation of the company's Mother MkIII tube amp, built around an analog FET signal path that emulates the response of a tube amp1. Pedal of the Day describes it as a modern take on the vintage high-wattage sounds of the early '70s, with added tonal range, control, and a voice of its own2.

The idea behind the pedal is straightforward: take the dual-channel tube preamp of the Mother amplifier and put it on a pedalboard. Pedal of the Day frames it as "a recreation of its dual channel tube-powered namesake, but refined into pedal format"2.

The two channels

The Mother Preamp's channels split the amp's character into two ranges. Channel A runs from a wide-open clean sound through edge-of-breakup into vintage crunch, while Channel B moves through shades of gain into heavier saturation2. Delicious Audio calls the pedal "a dual-channel take on the vintage high-wattage sounds of the early '70s"1.

Because the two channels are not stackable, the intended use is not cascading them for more gain. Instead, Pedal of the Day notes the pedal can provide "always-on" tone shaping with one channel and an additional gain and volume boost with the second2. That makes it work like a two-channel amp front end on a board: one setting for your base tone, another to step on for a lift.

The two channels cannot be stacked. Plan on using them as two independent voices rather than running one into the other1.

Controls

The control layout divides between per-channel and shared knobs. Gain and Loudness are separate for each channel, allowing two different settings of saturation and level, while the EQ section sits in the middle and is shared by both channels1.

ControlScopeWhat it does
Gain A / Loudness AChannel A onlySaturation and level for Channel A3
Gain B / Loudness BChannel B onlySaturation and level for Channel B3
Bass, Middle, TrebleShared3-way EQ section1
AbsenceSharedEmphasizes harmonic content1
DepthSharedTweaks the low end1

The Absence and Depth controls sit at either end of the familiar EQ idea: Absence works the harmonics, Depth works the lows1. Pedal of the Day notes the EQ section can be used for musical tone shaping or for transforming the voice of your existing setup2.

Outputs and how to run it

The pedal has two independently voiced outputs, which is where its flexibility as a preamp comes in2:

  • Output jack: Voiced to work best into the front of your amp, like a typical EQ or drive pedal. Pedal of the Day says this "virtually adds two more channels to your setup"2.
  • Power Amp/Direct Out: Provides the full-range response of the amp, designed to work into a more neutral power amp or your amp's effects return/preamp in2.

In practice, the choice between the two jacks is the choice between treating the pedal as a drive and EQ pedal in front of an amp, or as a true preamp feeding a power section or effects return.

The JFET circuit and the EAE collaboration

The Mother Preamp is not the only pedal Science Amplification has built from the Mother platform. The company also collaborated with John Snyder of EAE (Electronic Audio Experiments) on the Mother JFET Dual Channel Preamp, which recreates the flagship Mother MKII Tube Amplifier's JFET Tube circuit3. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson calls it "one of those JFET Tube circuit recreations that John Snyder does so well"3.

That pedal shares the same control scheme as the Mother Preamp: per-channel Loudness and Gain controls, with universal Bass, Middle, Treble, Absence (Harmonics) and Depth (Lows) controls shared by both channels3. Guitar Pedal X notes it is a larger format pedal, "exceptionally finely engineered," and that limited colourway editions in green, copper, silver and white have circulated at various dealers alongside the original black3.

What reviewers said

Pedal of the Day's reviewer was emphatic about the Mother Preamp, writing:

"This is, hands-down, one of the finest preamp pedals that I have ever played…EVER"
Pedal of the Day, 2 May 20242

The same review says the pedal gets the amplifier sound for a fraction of the price, without compromising tone or quality overall2. On the JFET collaboration, Guitar Pedal X describes "a beautifully expressive, dynamic and characterful whole gain section for your board / rig"3.

Questions

Can the two channels of the Mother Preamp be stacked?

No. The two channels are not stackable, so you cannot run one into the other for combined gain. Instead, the pedal is designed for one channel to act as an always-on tone shaper while the second channel serves as an additional gain and volume boost.

Is the Science Amplification Mother Preamp analog?

Yes. It uses an analog FET signal path that emulates the response of a tube amp. The all-tube signal path of the original Mother amplifier is replicated with carefully selected field effect transistors chosen to mimic the tone and response of tubes running at high voltage.

What is the Power Amp/Direct Out for?

The secondary Power Amp/Direct Out provides the full-range response of the amp. It is designed to work into a more neutral power amp, or into your amp's effects return or preamp in, as opposed to the normal Output jack, which is voiced for the front of your amp.

Who designed the Mother JFET Dual Channel Preamp?

The Mother JFET Dual Channel Preamp was a collaboration between Science Amplification and John Snyder of EAE (Electronic Audio Experiments). That pedal is a separate product from the Mother Preamp covered on this page, and it recreates the flagship Mother MKII Tube Amplifier's JFET Tube circuit.

What amp is the Mother Preamp pedal based on?

It is based on the circuitry of the Science Amplification Mother amplifier of the same name. Delicious Audio describes it specifically as a recreation of the company's Mother MkIII amp, refined into pedal format as the company's first pedal release.

Does the Mother Preamp use real tubes?

No. The all-tube signal path of the original Mother amplifier is replicated in the pedal using carefully selected field effect transistors (FETs), which mimic the tone and response of tubes running at high voltage.
