The Sola Sound Wow Fuzz is a vintage pedal made in England by Sola Sound in 1973. It puts two distinct circuits in one enclosure: one built around a wah effect, the other around a fuzz, so a player could get filter and fuzz tones from a single unit rather than pairing a wah pedal with a separate fuzz.1
What it does
TONEHOME describes the pedal as having "two distinct circuits, one for the ideal wah tone with a sweet, vocal midrange and the other for a mellow" fuzz voicing. In practice that means the wah side is voiced toward a vocal, midrange-forward sweep, while the fuzz side sits on the mellower end rather than the aggressive one.1
The wah circuit is described in stronger terms on the related Colorsound page:
"The huge soaring sweep, highs that level mountain tops and low mids that sink ships."
That wording comes from D*A*M's own product page for the Colorsound Wow-Fuzz, a closely related pedal, and gives a sense of the sweep and range the Wow Fuzz design is known for.
The two sides of the pedal break down like this:
Where it came from
Sola Sound built the pedal in England in 1973, placing it among the company's wah-and-fuzz designs of the early 1970s.1
The Wow Fuzz design is closely tied to the Colorsound Wow-Fuzz, which carries the same two-circuit wah-plus-fuzz idea; the D*A*M page for that pedal describes the same sweeping wah character.2
Sola Sound is also the firm behind the Tone Bender MKI fuzz lineage, and the Wow Fuzz was made in England by Sola Sound in 19731.
