Colorsound Wow-Fuzz

The Colorsound Wow-Fuzz, also written as the Colorsound Fuzz-Wah, is a vintage pedal from Colorsound that puts two effects in one enclosure: a fuzz and a wah. In the pedal's own naming, the "Wow" is the wah, and the "Fuzz" is the fuzz, so the name reads as a description of what the pedal does.¹

What it does

The Wow-Fuzz combines a silicon fuzz stage with an inductor wah circuit, so a single pedal covers the ground that would otherwise take a fuzz and a wah pedal chained together. The fuzz stage uses silicon transistors, and the wah section is built around an inductor, the traditional design for a wah's sweeping filter.¹

The circuit has also drawn interest from the DIY community. In April 2017, the technical site Guitar FX Layouts published a stripboard (vero) layout of the Wow-Fuzz circuit for players who build their own pedals, and the site's author, Zach, introduced it simply: "The Colorsound Fuzz-Wah, or to be exact the Colorsound Wow-Fuzz!"¹

The pedal is the Colorsound Wow-Fuzz, a fuzz and wah in one unit, as the source puts it: "The Colorsound Fuzz-Wah, or to be exact the Colorsound Wow-Fuzz!" If you come across the April 2017 version of the DIY layout, it is worth knowing that published layouts of vintage circuits like this one vary, and that the name on the enclosure is not always the name the circuit is known by.¹
