The SolidGoldFX Counter Current is a "dirty reverb" pedal from the Montreal builder, first shown to the public at the 8th Brooklyn Stompbox Exhibit in 2018. Its defining feature is a drive circuit applied to the wet reverb signal only, not the clean signal, so the dry guitar stays untouched while the reverb trail breaks up1.
What it does
The Counter Current pairs reverb with drive on the wet path, a design aimed at players who want grit and ambience from one box without muddying their core tone. Alongside the drive, it carries two knobs that shape the reverb itself1:
Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio described the pedal as slightly darker sounding than the company's classic Surf Rider, and pointed to its momentary feedback circuit as a tool for creating droney textures and noisy swells1.
"Slightly darker sounding that the company's classic Surf Rider, the Counter Current also features Tone and Decay knobs"
Where it came from
SolidGoldFX brought the Counter Current to the 8th Brooklyn Stompbox Exhibit in June 2018 as a brand new pedal, and Delicious Audio shot the first video of it there with the company's rep Ben1. It sits in a reverb line that also includes the Surf Rider III, the Surf Rider IV and the Ether modulated reverb, though the Counter Current's drive-on-the-wet approach sets it apart from those spring and modulation-focused designs1.
