The Spruce Effects Acadia Fuzz is a dual germanium fuzz pedal, announced in May 2020 as the first release in the company's Americana Series, a line of limited pedal releases from the Los Angeles maker1. Spruce Effects named it after Acadia, the eastern-most National Park in the United States, and each Americana pedal is a limited run1.
According to Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio, the pedal covers a wide tonal range: "It can do light, warm grit, subtle, volume-interactive fuzz, and raging sustain depending on settings"1. That volume-interactive quality is typical of germanium fuzz designs, where rolling back the guitar's volume cleans the sound up. If you are new to this corner of the pedal world, the Fuzz Pedals type page covers how fuzz differs from overdrive and distortion.
Controls
The Acadia is flexible thanks to its two gain stages and three tone-sculpting knobs1:
| Control | Position | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Gain stage 1 | Top row | Controls the first of the two gain stages1 |
| Gain stage 2 | Top row | Controls the second gain stage1 |
| Volume | Bottom, top | Master level1 |
| Bias | Bottom, middle | Classic voltage reducer for spitty, velcroy tones2 |
| Depth | Bottom, bottom | Sets the frequency being fed into the first gain stage, from beefy to trebly2 |
The Bias and Depth descriptions come from the Junior Ranger version of the Acadia, which carries the same control layout; on the original, the two top knobs control the two gain stages and the three bottom knobs handle Volume, Bias and Depth from top to bottom12.
The Junior Ranger version
In December 2024, Spruce Effects launched the Junior Ranger Series with a smaller and much more affordable version of the Americana Series Acadia2. The Junior Ranger Acadia is a silicon diode-based circuit rather than a germanium transistor design, and De Gregorio describes it as an uber-tweakable fuzz with multiple gain stages that "delivers a variety of tones ranging from articulate overdrive to full on wall of fuzz"2. It uses five knobs whose interaction delivers the tones: the two gain-stage knobs plus Volume, Bias and Depth2.
The two Acadias are different circuits: the Americana Series original runs on NOS germanium transistors, while the Junior Ranger is silicon diode-based12. If you are after a germanium fuzz specifically, the Junior Ranger is not a drop-in substitute.
Americana Series context
The Acadia opened a series that grew into a small family of Spruce Effects fuzzes, including the Volcanoes, reported in July 2020 as the company's second Americana Series pedal, the Lichen Fuzz and the Percolator Fuzz.

Questions
What does the Bias knob do on the Spruce Effects Acadia Fuzz?
Bias is one of the three bottom tone-sculpting knobs on the Acadia Fuzz, sitting between Volume and Depth. On the related Junior Ranger version of the Acadia, Spruce Effects describes the Bias control as a classic voltage reducer for spitty, velcroy tones, and the same style of control carries over to the original. Turning it changes the operating point of the fuzz transistors, which is how players get those degraded, gated fuzz sounds.
What does the Depth knob do on the Acadia Fuzz?
Depth is the bottom knob on the Acadia Fuzz, below Volume and Bias. Spruce Effects describes Depth as setting the frequency being fed into the first gain stage, from beefy to trebly. In practice it shapes which part of your guitar's spectrum drives the fuzz, so you can lean the pedal toward thicker low-end sounds or brighter, more cutting ones without touching the gain knobs.
What is the difference between the Acadia Fuzz and the Junior Ranger version?
The Junior Ranger Acadia Fuzz, launched in December 2024, is the smaller and much more affordable brother of the Americana Series Acadia. The original is a dual germanium fuzz built with NOS germanium transistors, while the Junior Ranger uses a silicon diode-based circuit. Both are tweakable multi-stage fuzzes with five knobs, but the Junior Ranger starts a new, more compact line of its own.
Is the Spruce Effects Acadia Fuzz germanium or silicon?
The Americana Series Acadia Fuzz is a germanium fuzz. Spruce Effects builds it with NOS germanium transistors, meaning new-old-stock parts, and uses two gain stages. The later Junior Ranger version of the Acadia is the opposite choice: it runs on a silicon diode-based circuit, which is one of the main differences between the two pedals.
Where is the Acadia Fuzz made?
The Acadia Fuzz is hand-wired and assembled in California by Spruce Effects, a Los Angeles company. The pedal also uses Switchcraft and Lumberg jacks and ships in a custom tin lunch box carrying case with a vintage look.
