The StewMac Ghost Drive Pre-Built DIY Transparent Overdrive is a transparent overdrive pedal from StewMac, the company better known for guitar-building supplies. It is a pre-built version of a circuit StewMac originally sold as a DIY pedal kit, meaning it arrives professionally assembled and ready to play rather than requiring soldering1.
What it does
As a transparent overdrive, the Ghost Drive is designed to push an amp into saturation without coloring its basic tone. Pedal of the Day described the appeal this way21:
"It's a guitar player's dream come true: saturated tube tone from your amp at a reasonable volume. It doesn't change the character of your amp2."
The circuit is based on the Klon Centaur Professional Overdrive. Pedal of the Day noted that few pedals reach the mythical status of the Centaur, and that StewMac scoured the world for the exact right components, using historically correct parts matching the originals2.
Background and release
StewMac introduced its first lineup of pre-built pedals on 8 September 2025, turning four of its DIY kits into finished pedals: the Sun Fuzz, the Ghost Drive Transparent Overdrive, the Two Kings Dual Boost Overdrive and the Lightcycle Phasor II Optical Phaser2. The Ghost Drive itself was reported as available pre-built on 18 October 20251. The Two Kings, its stablemate, is likewise a Centaur-style circuit, offered as a dual boost overdrive.
For players weighing it against other drive options, transparent overdrives sit apart from mid-focused designs like those compared in Boss SD-1 vs Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer, and more broadly among overdrive pedals.
