The Subdecay EZ MIDI MCP is an embedded MIDI platform for pedals from Subdecay, the Oregon pedal maker. It gives a pedal design presets, MIDI control and an OLED display, and it is meant to be run on the builder's own hardware. Subdecay's Brian Marshall describes it as "Presets, MIDI, and an OLED display for your pedal. Run it on your own hardware."1

What it does

The MCP is the simplest way into Subdecay's EZ MIDI system. It controls up to 8 digital pots, and Subdecay says no customization is needed to use it. Under the hood it is built on EZ MIDI 3.0 and runs on an STM32 microcontroller.1

Subdecay built the MCP first in the EZ MIDI 3.0 rollout because, in the company's words, "We built it first because it let us test the core of the system in its simplest form."21

For players and builders who want to try it before committing, the evaluation version is fully featured and free, running for 2 hours between power-ups.1

Where it came from

The EZ MIDI MCP is built on Subdecay's EZ MIDI 3.0 platform, running on an STM32 microcontroller.1

Subdecay describes the MCP as built on EZ MIDI 3.0, the current version of the company's EZ MIDI platform, with an STM32 microcontroller at its core.1

How it compares in the EZ MIDI range

Subdecay EZ MIDI PROMIDI control board for guitar effect designs: MIDI, savable presets and tap tempo, with changeable MIDI CC assignmentsBased on the EZ MIDI Control board, with more customization and support5

The MCP's 8 digital pots stand out against the 3 MCP42xxx pots of the EZ MIDI 2 and EZ MIDI Control boards. With the EZ MIDI 2, builders use 1 to 3 MCP42xxx ICs in a daisy chain, and the board does not check whether the pots are connected.3

The MCP is a platform for builders rather than a stompbox: it is run on the builder's own hardware, and Subdecay also offers the EZ Wizard programmer board for customizing EZ MIDI Control.6

Questions

What does the Subdecay EZ MIDI MCP do?

It is an embedded MIDI platform for pedals that adds presets, MIDI control and an OLED display to a pedal design. It controls up to 8 digital pots with no customization needed, and it is built on EZ MIDI 3.0 running on an STM32 microcontroller. Subdecay built it first because it let the company test the core of the system in its simplest form.

Is there a free version of the EZ MIDI MCP?

Yes. Subdecay offers an evaluation version that is fully featured and free, and it runs for 2 hours between power-ups. That makes it possible to try the platform before committing to it in a build.
